Secondly, a beautiful sunset is not proof of a higher power. It is proof of atmospheric gases changing the perceived color spectrum of visible light... I guess that is my fault for being an ecological remote sensing college product...

Damn that's awesome, can't believe I missed it. While I love all Live albums, I really feel the Distance to Here contains the best poetry.

I getcha. The lyric is definitely simple compared to Ed's other mind boggling poetry (I still don't get Gas Hed). The simplicity is why I like it though. As for your 2nd point, haha, yes by science thats what a sunset is. But my interpretation of Ed saying "I see the sunset and I perceive" is a leap of faith--Faith as 'proof' of being sure of what is hoped for and certain of what is not seen, in the biblical sense.
