I don't think he is capable of writing songs as good as his work in the 90's. He doesn't have the vocal strength, or the inclination. I think this album was a good effort on his part. As you said, post 2000 the songwriting got worse, so our expectations were managed leading up to this album. It's amazing that you like Alive more than TFATM!

IMO Alive has songs more songs that are listenable:

The Great Beyond
Grace
Stand
Zion
Just In Time
A New World

Vs.

The One
Seven
Parasite
All That I Wanted

The rest of the both albums stink, but the remaining Alive tracks are nowhere near as bad as the rest of The Flood and The Mercy.

I'd even say that the last 3 tracks of TFATM are the worst 3 songs he's written as a solo artist (with perhaps only Rome being that bad on Alive).

There is no way anyone can listen to it from start to finish and say they enjoyed every bit of this album.

I think Hoodstock's in the minority here. Everyone I've played it to thinks it's really good. I enjoy every song on it. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to it from start to finish. The only thing that sucks about it is that I'm blowing out my ears. I travel a lot for work which allows me to listen to a lot of music, and I can honestly say I'm addicted to this new stuff.

I think he meant there's no way a LIVE fan could listen to it and like it. Btw, I'm an Ed fan and I think it pretty much sucks (except for like 3 songs). It's rock music for a dental office, way to go Ed!
