Filter, Live members discuss breakups, comebacks, the (not so) good ol' days

By Allison Stewart Special to the Tribune

On trying to re-create their '90s hit-making formula

Richard Patrick: We took the "Hey Man" template, which is essentially "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "She Loves You," and you kind of work within your known, researched style. When a song is ahead, you've got to think about some of the reasons why it got there. … People say (the new song "Self Inflicted") is "Hey Man, Part 2," and I'm like, I guess so. But it's not like I'm ripping someone off. It's me.

Chad Taylor:As a band, it's really important to pay homage to the legacy Live built, but at the same time, I'm all about writing new songs and creating new experiences. The last thing I want to do is turn this into a tribute band. I think it would be easy to do that.

On internal and external animosities

Patrick: There was a lot of resentment when I made it. There was a lot of people who were like, "I can't believe this knucklehead I knew in high school is out there touring the world and making millions." There's a lot of animosity.

Taylor: Our relationship with Ed deteriorated to the point where we weren't having real conversations for the last 10years. We were kind of going through the motions. I kept thinking, "Maybe this is just what it's going to be. Maybe this is what life is like in a band when you've been together three decades."

People maybe can't tell the difference sometimes

Patrick: What I do (when I want to play a new song live) is, we just go into it and start playing it, and at the end of it when I see them rocking out and they're singing it, then I go, "And that's brand new!" And they're like, "What?" I don't announce it (beforehand). When I go to a concert and they announce they're going to play some new stuff, I go get some popcorn.

Taylor: I'm amazed on a daily basis at how many fans have no idea that it's not Ed singing. I've never gotten a complaint. Not one. … We went to the Grammys this year and took Chris out with us, and not once during eight days in the inner circle of the music industry did anyone even ask where Ed was. I found that bizarre and strange.

On getting kicked out of the nest

Patrick: When I was in Nine Inch Nails, Trent (Reznor) told me, "If you want the power, you got to go write your own (material)." He'd say, "Hey, listen, I'm going to move to New Orleans. What are you doing? Why don't you write yourself a record?" And I'd be like, "Uh, yeah, I'm going to go live with my mom and dad." We weren't being paid a ton of money, and I blew my money on beer and pot. We were sitting in a restaurant in Paris — I'll never forget it — and I said, "You're going to go buy new cars and live in New Orleans and have this whole new record contract, what the (expletive) am I going to do?" And he said, "Go write a record, man." And I was like, "Easy for you to say."

Taylor: The best thing that could happen was Ed walking away. It was incredibly painful, unlike anything I've ever experienced. It had to be similar to a divorce, but the turmoil has actually turned to joy. … I think the cool thing is, all parties seem to have found what they wanted. Ed wanted to make music on his own. He was unhappy making music with us, and we were unhappy making music with him.

On the trauma of replacing a band member

Patrick: It's such a tough place to be. … You can survive a death — look at Alice In Chains — and it can be OK. It's really hard stuff, bands are. It's a sexless relationship. The music is the love, and everything else is just drama.

Taylor: We (initially) called Chris and asked him to sing the Live songs with us because we wanted to see what it felt like to play the songs without Ed. I was very trepidatious — I thought the building would fall down when we were playing those songs without Ed. But instead we were like, "OK, this isn't so bad."

interesting. thanks for posting. I really don't understand why Richard is forcing comparisons to Short Bus. While I wish him the best of luck, the new album is not good, and It doesn't at all feel like Filter's early material.

Thanks for posting Dan. This breakup was obviously traumatic to many involved and many others took it in different ways. The fighting that has gone on since is ridiculous and the holier than thou attitudes that have surfaced since are downright sickening and laughable.

One thing for sure is that our lives are way to short to be lived holding grudges and slinging shit at each other. My eldest daughter has taught me an important lesson in a very simple manner, not wanting to kill an ant. I watched her going outside repeatedly and asked what she was doing and she replied that she was taking ants outside. She explained that apparently they are sentient beings that can apparently feel pain and she did not want to be responsible for killing one. The perspective I gained on that was amazing for me as it pertains to my own life.

Everyone makes mistakes. People sometimes act in irrational ways when cornered, I've done it myself. I was very angry with Ed at one time. But what purpose does that serve now? None. I'm still very disappointed in everything that happened but I'm not here on this earth to judge anyone. Listening to the old Live now brings back different memories and different emotions than those I experienced when this all first happened. I have it in me to forgive many things but not to forget.

I'm very happy that the feelings experienced in the beginning have changed for so many. Especially for those directly involved. Hearing CT speak those words and hearing him sound happy really means a lot to me. I think that there are a lot of people who just need to move on from this and let it all go wherever its meant to end up. I see lots of folks carrying grudges and hatred that really makes me pity them deeply. Carrying that around during a lifetime that leterally flies by is just so very sad. That time would so much better be served to love those who are closest to you and spend that energy in places better spent.

I sincerely hope that both sides in this debacle can just agree to disagree and let it all go for those very reasons. I think that if there is one thing we all have in common, it's that at one time, we all shared a deep love and respect for all the members of this band and we need to remember that and respect that about one another. The split caused many of us to take shots at either side, and hopefully that is all out of our systems now. My mother has always reminded me of something very important and that is to take a good long hard look at myself before being arrogant enough to be judge, jury and executioner over anyone elses affairs.

A HUGE thanks to everyone who has spoken with me and agreed to get back to a respectable place where we can all be respectful to one another and more imoportantly, to the members of a band who gave us music for two decades that changed many of our lives for the better.
