Long songs Options

I've always had a soft spot for long songs. When a band takes their time to develop the track and doesn't try to get to the chorus in 30 seconds makes for a more satisfying musical experience. It also gives the band more scope to experiment and flesh it out when playing it live...

It's one thing to have a 8+ minute song on an album, but it takes courage to release such a track as a single and then try to make a music video that does it justice.

So, what are your favourite long tracks? A standout for me is "Estranged" by Guns N' Roses. It's an epic track that clocks in at around 9 minutes 30 sec. The video cost 4 million dollars back in 1993 which made it one of the most expensive videos of the time. My favourite part of the video is when Axl jumps off an oil tanker in the middle of the ocean. Definitely worth checking out.

I've never seen the video - def before it's time. It is a great song. That's really him doing the jump off the oil tanker?! Looks like such a young gun back then!

John Butler would have to be my fav for a long song. Ocean is one that comes to mind. No words, just his magic with his guitar. I can even meditate to it! I have an old version of it from before he made it big. And he's a honey, what can I say

likewise i like long songs, when they come together and really nail it there is something special because it is so much harder getting an 8+ minute song right as opposed to 3mins.

one of my favs recently has been the Mariner's Revenge Song by The Decemberists, a 9 minute song dressed as a type of sea shanty about 2 men trapped inside a whale where one details to the other how they came to be in such a situation ... this clip puts a fan made comic art to the song which works really well:

I listen to a lot of experimental, post-rock, ambient, drone, etc, so long songs are not really anything out of the ordinary.

'Xanadu' by Rush is a true masterpiece. Fans understand what i mean.
I listen a lot to prog/symfo bands. Another favorite is 'Ocean Cloud'. A song about an ocean rower called Don Allum. I personally think this is one of the most beautiful symphonic songs ever. It runs 18 minutes.
