Yeah, they're on their way to redeeming themselves after voting for Bush, not once but TWICE!

QUOTE(Pokey @ Nov 7 2012, 4:46 am) *

I thought it was a $70 fine, but according to online:

"Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.

If, within 21 days, the apparent non-voter fails to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or declines to pay the penalty, then prosecution proceedings may be instigated. If the matter is dealt with in court and the person is found guilty, he or she may be fined up to $50 plus court costs."

Not exactly ball busting, but AN incentive I guess.

It's good and bad, I think if you can vote then you should to have a say in the shaping of your country. On the downside, a heap of people who just don't give a shit are forced to vote who are uneducated in the policies of the parties vying for government and may decide to vote based on the fact they don't like the sound of the prime minister's voice as opposed to the policies she is putting forward. That person probably wouldn't be bothered going to vote if they weren't made to and so their nothing vote unfortunately gets counted.

That's all Pokey? I thought it was heaps more. We forgot to do our local council elections the other week and I called council and was told $240 per freakin person! I'm trying to come up with a sufficient excuse for when I get the please explain letter.

It's easy to not vote in a compulsory voting situation. Just scribble on the paperwork. Or fill it in incorrectly. Just make sure you get your name crossed off.

Are all the Americans sick to death of this stuff? God I am and I'm not even there!!!! I caught sight of a tv at work today and what was on it? The US election......NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Any way, I know Obama is back with a bang!

If you are too stupid to vote, educate yourself. Stop using damn excuses, stop being a lazy piece of shit. Figure it out and vote. It is not difficult.

Yeah I was surprised... There's no way it's $240 for council elections. I almost didn't vote in the council elections until I saw that the guy who was our real estate agent was one of the people running and he is the biggest scumbag out for his own wealth so I voted purely so I could put him last... He had by far the most campaign posters up than any candidate but he came 9th out of 11 so I was very happy lol.gif

All governments were set up to protect the interests of the cultural elite. Having said that, I'm glad Obama won. I can't believe there was so much opposition to Obamacare!

Americans can be funny about that Wam - Australians just can't imagine not having it. Pretty sad when you compare the health systems.

Have you paid it before?!

Well, $140 sounds better than $480! (for two of us).

just cos people have a different viewpoint and didn't vote for your candidate, does not make us uneducated, blind followers.
