forget who wrote them, and they really aren't great lyrics. ed could've written them (now, not old ed). I never understood the hype around lennon or the Beatles. boring. although, in context, I get how much they changed the music scene, but I think they're an example of the impetus for change not actually the best and brightest to come out of that change.

or call me names because I think the Beatles and lennon were boring. heynow.gif

I'm not a huge Beatles fan but if you think they are boring you probably need to spend more time with the interesting parts of their catalog. The most popular stuff was cookie cutter (though very good cookie cutter) but their experimental stuff is what really shaped music from that point forward.

Yea that John Lennon doesn't have a clue does he.

I misread Badman's post. Didn't realise those were lyrics to a Lennon song. Doesn't make them any less naff, to me.

I know. I'm awful.

but seriously, mind games, while I agree w the idea, is not songwriting genius.

QUOTE(SJN1279 @ Jul 5 2012, 2:10 pm) *

I'm The Proof
The Garden
Mind Games (John Lennon cover)

The other two I do not know.

Anybody want to take my bet that The Garden is a song chocked full of unveiled references to the Garden of Eden?

This is the problem. Ed's songwriting has shifted from deep metaphors where he never tipped his hand and let the listener know explicitly what he was referring to (thus allowing the lyrics to take on deeper, varied, personal and universal meaning) to now - where he makes explicit, thinly-veiled or un-veiled comparisons - this is like that. He has either lost or abandoned the real artisitic and skillful songwriting that he once demonstrated. Now we have songs about the Garden, I'm the Proof, Eat You Bread, Zion, etc. In the old days, these lyrics and song titles would have been so symbolic, that Ed could have been talking about these same subjects, but we would have to think about what it was he was trying to say and different people would have different interpretations.

Add on to that, the fact that the music is now much more simple and nursery rhyme like. The melodies and song structure is like children's music. This is compounded by the fact that it is incredibly vocalist-centric. It lacks the depth and nuance that a song has when the product comes from the collaboration of a drummer, bassist, guitarist and vocalist. There is no emphasis on the other pieces of the musical score because Ed doesn't really have or use that perspective. The songs are all about him as vocalist, and they are produced that way too. This is the problem.

Nick, even putting personal dislike for Ed's aside, I think that everybody who argues with you here loves Ed as a vocalist and lyricist and wants better from him, but sees these objective issues with his music and the contrast with old Live, CCP and other great artists who are out there making music.

I think mind games is a good song. Hoping the other 4 are not Christian rock but the titles make me believe it will be.

I quite enjoyed the Rise video on youtube. Pretty catchy song. Couldn't make out all the lyrics but sounded similar to what was on offer with Alive. Ed kinda ruined it for me with his finale though. Swearing for the hell of it doesn't make the song any harder. That said i would rate it better than I'm the Proof.

The tiny little solo by the guitarist wasn't half bad. I agree with the above poster that it kinda comes out of the blue. He's all singing "in the glory of the lord" and a few seconds later he is channeling wam with his beady little eyes comment.
