Just like I said earlier...

QUOTE
PSU also had their most successful alumni donation drive. They will be fine. The alumni/sheep will not allow the football program or the university to suffer.

All of this could have been avoided if Joe and his cronies didn't cover up this mess. Unfortunately the football program was more important.

$208 M in donations in the last fiscal year, which ended June 30th. I'd expect another nice check next year. They will survive.

I don't buy the students being innocent. In my opinion the students are partly responsible. These nutcases are/were literally outside crying in front of the Paterno statue even AFTER the Freeh report. They were STILL trying to defend him even after everything was out in the open. Grow up. Paterno was an enabler? Yeah, so were the students and the alumni and the administration.

Fuck that and fuck their idol worship. Burn that place to the ground.

point taken. *those* students are idiots.

I guess my real problem with the ncaa sanction is - who does it actually hurt? the trustees are fine. most of those staff still have jobs, or quit on their own. if the students are fine, then really, this is just the ncaa making money off raped kids. (where does the money go? I don't know)

The 60m fine is actually being set aside to help victims. Whether anything else will be done I have not heard.

The reason the NCAA came down as hard as they did was to more or less obliterate the current Penn State culture so they can start over and hopefully send a message to other colleges and fans who foolishly treat their football like it is the most important thing on the planet. That is what the core of the punishment is about. Penn State valued it's reputation/image more than it did those kids. That is as backwards as it gets. That needed to be put to sleep.

If they want to damage the school and fix the culture, discredit the university accredidation, get an entire new board, at this point the $$ will still flow. Start the trials of Curley, Spanier, Shultz. NCAA should have waited on that.

I think the NCAA had to act sooner than later in order to give any that wanted to transfer the time to go through whatever process there is.

True I see your point, I guess my thoughts were similar in the sense of a complete clean out of administration involved or anyone with even a hint of connection to it and start fresh. My only concern were the kids who are truly innocent getting caught up in it and effected by it. But at the same time it is a damn strong message to any other organisation who may have been tempted to follow suit. But the punishment for the dude who did the rape and anyone who covered it up should be a life sentence with no parole ... see how they like being known as kiddy fiddlers in prison or big hot shots more concerned about their prizes, trophies and reputation than blowing the lid on what they knew was happening.

A few things after reading this thread:

-The NCAA can issue more penalties depending on what comes out. They aren't necessarily done.
-There are going to be more and more connections coming out. I've heard potential things about a pediphilia ring in Philly being connected, stuff through the charity, and a speaker from NAMBLA who came in 2002. This thing is probably far from over.
-If you are a football player and you don't want to get the hell away from the stench of Penn State right now then you deserve what you get. Sorry but that's just the way it is.

I agree and for the second thing you mentioned, I heard some stuff about that too. It is definately far from over.

Here's an idea. Shouldn't college be all about learning? How did sport and business weasel its way into education. I think it's ludicrous that students are given scholarships purely on their ability to play football or basketball. The US education system is flawed beyond belief.

College athletics in the US is big big business Dangum. It funds a lot of University activities within the NCAA and out of sports too. It's also very corrupt and not so innocent anymore. It's almost worse than organized crime, while youre at it. the gambling on NCAA football is larger than the NFL i think.

You tell 'em Dan!

Sport has its own unstoppable culture - this is what happens when they try and make it the basis for something as fundamental as education.

Why is anyone surprised?

Major college athletics are farm systems for professional sports. Pay the players and be done with it.

It's been corrupt since the '80s, it's just more obvious now thanks to the internetz and the fact that ESPN keeps throwing its wang around.

I don't think paying players is the answer, either.
