He does occasionally sound like he's been on helium, but if you listen to Night Of Nights, that's the Ed I know and love through and through. Still melts me into a puddle every time I hear him sing.

Ed's voice has changed more from album to album than any band i have ever heard in my life. i mean on MJ his voice was almost cracking lol, then on TC he was just pretty much perfect with the raw intensity and could still chill out too. SS we got see his voice start to get a little higher, but to me that was when he sounded best. TDTH was the beginning of the super high pitch and his voice sounded alot different from the first 3 albums on this, although it is a great album. I won't break down the last albums, but that is my take on Ed's voice, which i think turned alot of casual fans away towards the end.

I doubt it changed that much. But let me say, right now his voice is in perfect form judging by Alive and several good quality live (no pun) vids

Yes, his voice on alive is the best since '99. His SINGING voice HAS changed alot, it is obvious to me.

I have recently been watching some concert performances of Ed on youtube and i have noticed that even some people in attendance have actually reacted negatively about his voice. I am not gonna give links or anything as i am sure some of you have even noticed this. My point is that i feel the same way, i hate the way he sings now. How is it possible that he thinks he sounds good, that blows my f'ing mind!

Same reason he thinks his songs "rawk". Ed is delusional.

This is a great topic and should be moved to the Ed section.

Honestly I think a big reason why Ed doesn't have "it" anymore is because of wear and tear.

It's sort of like pitching. Some guys have the talent and ability to pitch professionally and last years, even decades, while some don't even last a few years let alone make it to the major leagues.

There are definitely other factors that others have alluded to. This includes too much/little drugs, becoming a sell-out, pandering to a certain group of music listeners that will bop to anything, etc.,

Someone mentioned recently about the nasal thing he's got going on. That's what I can't stand now. It's obvious he's had lessons since the early days but his old voice was great - not perfect but it carried itself.

Now at times he sounds like my whining bitch of an ex step mother.

That was me. At some point after the release of TDTH, his default voice shifted up a few tones and took on a sort of nasal-y thing. Steadily got worse down the years. Is it his fault, do you think? Or just circumstance (i.e. surgery) and natural ageing / wear and tear? I hope it's not been a concerted effort by him, because if it was an intentional change it was a shit decision.

I do not think he is in charge of this. On the other hand, people WORK with their voices to sound good as they are aging. A perfect example of this is Dave Gahan and Chris Cornell.

Liam Gallagher had a good raw voice until he nearly lost it about 5-6 years ago. He quit drinking and stoppedf smoking for some time. 2 years ago I saw him fronting Beady Eye 5 meters in front of me. He sounded perfect.

People shall work with it. Seems like Ed does not have enough time to dedicate it to his only instrument left.

I think it's half and half, his voice has probably naturally changed a bit (or unnaturally, smoking maybe). He certaintly became more nasily and it's gone up after TDTH. But what annoys me more is what he does to make it worse. He pushes it to places it just can't and shouldn't go. Ed really has a limited range, when he stays within that range it's amazing, when he goes outside he sounds amateur. Some of the recordings he posted on his site from the acoustic shows he goes for notes and it just falls to pieces. He butchers The Distance and Face and Ghost. He tries to make it too cutesy. Too many "ooooo"'s.
But occasionally he just gets it right. There is one recording he did of Turn My Head and the first chorus he tried to go high and it didn't work, then for every other chorus he suddenly sang it in a lower tone and it sounded fantastic! But he doesn't seem to have that worked out for every show.
For Ed I think the rule should be "less is more", he tries to do too much now and make it too cutesy and his voice has to do epic things... Listen to the Rhode Island recording of Susqohanna which to me is almost Ed at his best or maybe a version of Supernatural. He doesn't try to do too much with it, it's straight forward but he sings in his range and the power and emotion is there.
I can hear emotion in his old voice, now all I hear is a "performance". A guy trying to show off. Ed's biggest problem with his voice is that he thinks he's better than he is, I think it's that simple.
