Yeah trying to cover the song in a JB style is not going to work for most singers, definitely not for Ed. As DQ says, needs to use the Big Boy voice. There's moments when Chris Shinn actually sounds Buckley-esque, but he hasn't got the range, hell not a lot to. Not surprisingly I think his Dad, Tim Buckley would have absolutely nailed it though.

How cool is that Shinn can sound Buckley-esque at times? It would be pretty neat if Live re-recoreded Feel the Quiet River Rage (about Buckley I believe) and Shinn uses his Buckley-esque chops.

I mean he's not exactly like him by any stretch, Buckley's voice is a rare voice ... but there are moments in his solo album and Everything is Energy that remind me of Buckley. Particularly on a rock track of Buckley's like "Eternal Life"

Buckley definitely was a rare talent. The song Someday I is where I hear some of that raw emotion in Shinn's vocals.

Since I contributed in taking the thread towards Buckley, I'll post my favorite performance I've seen of his. Simply awe inspiring.

WWITD never quite did it for me. I'll have to revisit that track. Awesome that you put that idea out there already.

Yeah I think WWITD is probably my least favorite on TDTH, actually if I had to go for a second to last favorite it would be FTQRR haha sorry OTD hehe.gif

That's the song I was thinking of! the wailing around the 2:18 mark is massive Jeff Buckley

QUOTE(SJN1279 @ May 2 2012, 7:14 am) *

Oddly enough, one of the best songs he played that night was “Zion”… a song from his solo record. It sounded like Throwing Copper-era Live complete with country music influences and brilliant lyrics.

I agree that seeing Ed play an acoustic set of Live songs is generally satisfying. Ed's voice and those songs will both always have a place in my heart.

But saying that Zion sounds like it is from the Throwing Copper era is just plain wrong. The guy who wrote Zion is the epitome of the preacher on the cover of the Throwing Copper album leading the flock of sheep-like followers off a cliff. The guy who wrote the songs on Throwing Copper would have criticized the guy who wrote Zion for being the "hitler in a robe of truth". The guy who wrote Zion is a guy who fears a flame (Hell) and burns the crowd that has a name (those non-Christians who don't believe). The guy who wrote Zion is the guy sitting in the chair on the alter, earning a ransom from up there. The guy who wrote Zion is the guying playing the part of a teacher, who won't hesitate to leave you there by yourself chained to fate. He is distributing fear in the name of God and love (what happens if you are not a believer in Christ like Ed is? The corollary to Ed's happy Jesus teachings is that if you don't believe, you aren't saved like Ed is). Where did Ed get this plan? That he could give to you what you already have.

Take me on up to Zion
Where my Lord will comfort me
He will lay me down by still water
While my enemies run from me

Take me on up to Zion
Think I gotta psalm
Runnin' throught my head
Bring me over to King David
Gonna sing it now for all my friends

Zion is like Throwing Copper? Really? I think that Ed "Throwing Copper" Kowalczyk would roundly criticize Ed "Zion" Kowalczyk.

about zion, didnt chad gracey allude to the possibility that the song was written well before ed's solo album? Something along the lines of ed playing "new" material in a lounge act ...
