I use EAC (exact audio copy) which works really well, however it's been a long time since I set it up and am not sure of the exact steps. I quick look online finds this http://rip59.dk/EACFlac/EACFlacRipping.html ... it's pretty long but its a pretty detailed step by step guide. Also looks like its a little dated with using an older version, but it'll still be relevant for the most parts ... a lot of the screen shotted steps look familiar.

I'm sure Dan probably has something better though, but once EAC is properly set up, its a really good ripping program. I'm dreading when I have to format/get a new computer, which will be soon, as things like this that I have set up, and set up for a long time, will need to be investigated again!

EAC is great software. Trader's Little Helper is also a nice program.

I realised: Have never ripped a CD to FLAC. How do i do that?

Firstly, you need to rip a CD to a WAV file. I recommend EAC. I recently downloaded the latest version and the graphical user interface has changed for the worse. If you don't like the changes, try to find an older version. EAC also has the option to use an internet database to automatcially name your files - it comes in handy.

Once you have WAV files on your PC, use Trader's Little Helper to convert to FLAC (or MP3). http://tlh.easytree.org/

Once you have encoded to FLAC, it's usually nice to add tags to the files (artist, album, track name, track number, genre etc.)
I use a media player called Foobar2000 - http://www.foobar2000.org/
Load all your FLACS into Foobar2000 - right click on each file (or groups of files) and edit the tags.

dangum's notes are perfect. That's how to do it. I used to use the FLAC frontend to encode WAV to FLAC, but it doesn't run on my new machine (Win7, 64-bit). I have heard that many people had issues since Vista. Trader's Little Helper works a treat though.

Also, I think Foobar is the only software that can tag and display tags for FLAC files.

Foobar also can convert anything into anything, you just need the flac commandline to convert when you wanna have Flac. It can also rip CDs directly into FLAC - choose Level 8, the highest quality. (Saves you the lot bigger .wav files) Again, you need to install Flac and point Foobar to the commandline. http://flac.softonic.de/

Foobar is NOT the only prog for tagging Flacs. You can also do this with Mp3Tag, which is easier to handle since you can more easily type in the titles and track numbers and just jump to the next by ENTER and simply go on typing. I love this little programme, it's perfect for tagging easy and fast a lot of files. http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

To add tags, right click on the track(s) and select "Properties". Fill out all the fields and then press "OK". Tags will automatically be saved.
