+Ed+, since you're a big soccer fan I'd like to get your opinion on whether this is a penalty.

For people who don't know it was the grand final match in the Australian A-League last weekend between Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory. It finished very controversially when in the final seconds of the game (95th minute) a penalty was awarded to Brisbane... It's caused great debate in this country...

Here's a video showing the highlights of the final few minutes (the equalising goal, the sending off of a Perth Glory player and the penalty decision). You can skip to 1:30 to see the penalty.

Of course not.

The forward was not pressed at all, noone touched his legs. However, due to the ammount of the defenders it is pretty easy that the referee did not see that noone touched him.

All in all I can say I do not like the way the referee behaves. He does not seem firm or serious. Trying to run away from the players, not trying to calm them down or even offer several yellows. Pfft

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't think it was a penalty either but then again I'm a Perth Glory fan so my opinion is clearly biased smile.gif

The funny thing is that even though both commentators claimed it wasn't a penalty they changed their minds by the next day. Also all of the Fox Sports experts agreed that it was a penalty as well. shrug.gif

The referree was one of the youngest to ever be in charge of the final. He's 25 years old. Get this: he's from Queensland (the state where Brisbane Roar are based) and his girlfriend also works for the Brisbane team.

And he was appointed for the match of the team from the same town?

Wow.

It has been ages since we got a referee coming frmo a town one of the teams is from. We had huge rows back in the days about this. Mostly because two of the biggest cities, Moscow, the capital, and St Petersburg, where I come frmo have been crude enemies for hundreds of years. You know what I mean for sure. Not that we want to be the capital or smth, but the fight is endless. Anyway, Moscow hates us reallly MUCh more than we hate them, and they have 6 teams, while we have nly 1. So when WE become the champions, you can imagine the buzz. Only this year some referees frmo Moscow could be appointed for a game against us when a Moscow team is playing. And we hardly had hard times playing. Guess their professionalism grows or smth lol.gif

I don't know a lot about soccer (except for the fact that my 4 year old plays it) but I'd have to say that ain't no penalty (unless you play in the NBA where breathing on somebody is a foul).

I think the word you're probably looking for is "Rubbish"!

Follow the Australian competition too. Some Dutchies play over there.
I'm a big soccer fan too (see my avatar, John Guidetti from Feyenoord, hired from Manchester City).

Btw, congratulations Ed thumbsup.gif with your Zenit.

If they're anything like the majority of the commentators for the AFL this year, then they don't know fucking dick. Jesus Christ channel 7 is making it tough to watch footy this year.

But back to soccer, this really couldn't have come closer to the wire for this, is there not any kind of video reply to get a better look? As Dimi said it may have been tough to call in that position, but surely taking a second for a better look would have changed things? Or did that happen and he still decided it was a penalty?

No, there was no second look - he didn't even confer with the assistant referees (linesmen). Just immediately signaled for a penalty.

It was a 'courageous' decision. Apparently.

(unless you play in the NBA where breathing on somebody is a foul).

Perth Glory's leading goalscorer was elbowed in the face about 20 minutes in the first half. He needed 50 stitches after the match. Click on this link for some more explicit photos of his injury.

My 4 year old just finished her spring league. Have to say kids soccer is way more fun to watch than kids baseball, plus it looks like good exercise.

I don't know much about the sport but I was even considering signing up for a co-ed indoor league this winter.

Do so!

Actually, I am a crazy football player I must say. I try to play every week indoor, but with summer all the guys are leaving for the country houses for the weekend so we hardly play.

However, a couple f weeks ago we had the last game in the city championship. And we won 10-5 lol.gif
