he's using some type of autotune microphone to enhance and to make up for lack of stagehands here on I alone.

QUOTE
Interview: Ed Kowalczyk - Interviews & Profiles, Music

As the longtime Live frontman and lynchpin of forceful alternative rock prepares to plug his first album flying solo, he chats with Cherylene Chan about his new direction and being a fan of Adele

When it comes to your solo career, was it hard to move away from being Live’s frontman?
Not really. As the singer and songwriter for all of the years that Live was together, there was a natural continuity into this new phase. The biggest change was getting to perform and record with new musicians. I didn’t know how much I needed that until I stepped out and did it.

Tell us what fans can expect from your first gig in Singapore.
My 'I Alone' acoustic show’s really powerful. I play all of the hits from my time with Live, like 'Lightning Crashes', 'I Alone' and 'The Dolphin’s Cry', as well as some of my newer material. I’ll also have my good friend and drummer extraordinaire, Ramy Antoun, with me on percussion. Fans are always pleasantly surprised by how emotionally intense the show is.

How has your own sound evolved since Live’s last record?
There’s definitely a new urgency in my music these days, as opposed to the last Live recordings. A lot of that is inspired by this new phase of my life as a solo artist and getting to work with new people.

What was your inspiration while writing your solo album?
I was inspired by the whole package of being alive, no pun intended! Human beings are so unique – we are, in a sense, both of the Earth and of the spirit. These two opposite elements meet up in us and have an epic lifelong battle. I wanted to write the soundtrack to that as best as I can.

Is there a follow-up to [your debut solo LP] Alive in the works?
I’m currently in the studio and plan to release an EP this summer, followed by a full album in spring 2013.

What’s the most played album on your iTunes right now?
Well it’s not on iTunes yet, because it’s the brand new music I’m working on. I tend to get very monolithic and focused while I’m recording new stuff. But when my daughters force me to stop critiquing my new recordings in the car and turn on something else, we’ve been devouring Adele. I love her voice, the production, everything about her really. She seems to single-handedly remind the world that music doesn’t have to be overproduced, oversung and without depth to be successful.

As a father of three, is it hard juggling touring and time home with your family?
Actually, the pace of my touring these days is just perfect. I really don’t go out for much more than a week at a time. It allows me to spend time with them and also have a good schedule – a nice ebb and flow, as they say.

During the last US presidential elections, you were quite an active supporter of Barack Obama. Has your candidate of choice changed this year?
At this point, I’m observing the process and soaking up information as I go between raising my kids and rocking out.
Ed Kowalczyk performs at TAB on 25 Apr at 8pm

whoa man....the musicians have all but been banished

urgency for?? gettin paid?

If ed's alive now, then he was dead for many years and no has risen?? can we get a more cliche religious pontification than that?

-now we see EP and full LP plans. Why not take the time and make a good record? see urgency comment.

Ed, take a clue from Adele....really.

Keep rocking Ed kicking.gif

He's drawing inspiration from Adele? Wow ... Ed, you're better than that man, surely!

Oh well, you just keep on "rocking" out! But you know, like quiet, sensible rock!

Well, maybe that's true. But she's still the most overrated thing to come out of music recently. An article I saw titled "How Adele saved music" made me throw up in my mouth a little.

I wouldn't call Adele overrated by any stretch of the imagination. Has her success overplayed her music a bit, maybe so, but don't take anything away from her. She has an amazing voice, and sings with such emotion.

Also at all of the award shows, it was amazing to see that the belle of the ball was a larger girl from England, not some overproduced slut, who has had their music digitized all while they didn't even write their own music.

Dave Grohl, who I respect insanely, has gone on record as saying that he's a huge Adele fan.

Usually I agree with you but Adele is not overrated by any stretch. She's one of the few that actually lives up to the hype. I just love this NPR performance. Couldn't get much more bare bones and she sounds fantastic.

If you get a chance watch Adele's Unplugged performance. The power of her voice is jaw dropping. They say she is very humble as well.

I only watched the I Alone video. I don't feel well and need to go to bed.

But I wish he had left Ramy at home.

I don't mind Ed's voice in I Alone. I mind Ramy. I don't know what he says into his funky mic - anybody got a clue?

Found this blog review on the net:

Not much advertising, but facebook and word-of-mouth saw a rather good turnout for Ed Kowalczyk's intimate solo gig at TAB. (Come 11pm, TAB is now...a Thai disco. Anyway.) We didn't exactly check with the friends to see who's going. It was a pleasant surprise to see quite a number of familiar faces at the gig.

He started off with 'Selling The Drama'. At some point, he urged the audience to give the next person a hug or something, and he joked, "I heard snuggling's legal in Singapore, right?" Many of us chortled. Not too sure what context he was referring to...very probably in the typical assumption of Singapore as a 'fine' city. However, that was certainly not what we decided to take it to mean, in light of the island city's recent salacious scandals.

The 1997 'Lakini's Juice' was totally nostalgic. Must be the effect of growing older. Lots of songs at the various gigs evoke nostalgia nowadays. This was no hipster gig. Well, we didn't feel particularly old at this gig. (Unlike Laneway 2012.) Everyone was about the same age. Hehehehehe. Everybody sang along to 'Heaven'. Wasn't in the mood for a raucous night, so the vibes and the acoustic gig with Ed Kowalcyzk's smooth and gruff vocals were perfect.
