I'd be embarrassed to work for Epic Records in the US seeing how they dropped the ball on SFBM. Especially after next week......

Frustrating as it is, I don't think pushing back a release date to maximize sales potential constitutes dropping the ball.

Based on the radio popularity of The River, there wouldn't have been a significant amount of people buying the record because of the song had it been released on its original release date. Believe it or not, Epic did do a variety of things to try to push the song, although I do think they could have done more...

They pushed the River to a point then switched release disitribution of the album to Red Ink. After that switch occurred and the album release was pushed to June 13th, all promotion stopped. The single was equal to Teddy Geiger's song before the push ended, Teddy Geiger's song has since taken off. Epic totally stopped the push for whatever reason, politics we will never figure out.

Even if they stopped the push of the single, May 9th release coupled with the tour, would have given the album decent sales. They were in NYC for the original release date and visited Howard Stern. They probably would have visited numerous other shows and stations to give the album strong publicity. The tour covered every major market from NY to LA, and is resulting in 0 sales for Epic right now.

American Idol contestants are allowed to invite their favorite artists to the finale next week. Since LIVE is in LA for a show the same day, it makes perfect sense for Chris to ask them to perform I Walk the Line or any other song from their catalogue on the show. If LIVE could get on the highest rated show of the year, album sales would skyrocket. Unfortunatley for Epic, Awake would be the album that would get the sales increase.

Epic is just totally inept. There is no other way to put it.
