Interesting developments, if you can call them that. Admittedly I know nothing of this guy or his previous work. Think I'll wait until the official announcement before passing judgement

I will just say this to address Nick's insane bullsh*t. CCP waiting for Ed to return like the prodical son, and make a Live reunion that is a "success" would be a success in Nick's eyes and Ed's eyes. But Live with Ed will never EVER be a success again artistically, unless Ed completely changes his approach to God, music, his friends, his fans, money, music writing and the music business. And then when he figures all of that out, he needs to figure out how to somehow write songs like he used to when he was 18, because he sure as hell hasn't been able to figure out what it was that he lost a long time ago. CCP are Ed's age, and they have families, but somehow they still have the raw, raucous, passionate creativity for rock and roll, and they can still turn it out like they did when they were 18. And I still have the appetite to hear that music and not Christian adult contemproary"oooh la la". To use Nick's words, Live will be a "colossal fail" if they get back together with Ed. The world does not need a SFBM sequel or Alive II from Live. No one needs to see Ed "shake his moneymaker" to the groovey beat of Sofia at a Live concert again. THAT, my friends, is what defiles the legacy of Live. When Live recorded songs like Negation and Good Pain, they were Live. Live was being driven off course for a decade, and no reunion with Ed will ever be any good unless Ed get's struck on his bald head by a lightening bolt and get's shaken back to reality. In the meantime, let him go play Live's greatest hits in front of a bunch of brow beaten session musicians until the well runs dry.

Now on to Live 2.0.

I am a SUCKER for a tenor lead singer. I love Shannon Hoon from Blind Mellon. Listen to The Pusher on the Nico album. That is sick! Have you ever listened to Journey's greatest hits with the volume turned all the way up?!?!? Sung along with Only the Young? Don't Stop Beleivin'? Who could ever replace Steve Perry. But heck, they were on the Today Show last week with their new Asian lead singer who is 20 years younger than the rest of the band and the place was going nuts. I was like they still had everything going on that they had 30 years ago. Have you ever sung along with Led Zeppelin? Boston?!?! One of the things I love most about TGF is Kevin Martin's powerful tenor range. The thing that grabs ahold of me and moves me on all of this great, powerful music is a tenor singer. This Chris Shinn dude sounds like he has the chops. If he is the new lead singer, I will be completely thrilled. I hope he has a great personality and is the kind of guy that we can all get behind.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Ed became an artistically challenged asshole before this supposed turn toward Christiandom. Don't blame Jesus for Ed's overpriced coffee beans. If you'll remember correctly it was He who went blazing through the temple, turning over the money changer's tables...

Anyway... I otherwise agree. But until something happens to wake him up out of whatever self-centered dream world he's living we may as well forget Ed ever writing anything close to TC II.

I will use another movie reference. And when I say this, I mean to refer to the underlying principle that is being illustrated. I am not trying to call Ed, or Christian music, or Christians a retard. And I don't like or use the word "retard" because it is offensive. But the movie scene, while controversial, is very funny.

Tropic Thunder

I wish I knew how to embed youtube videos, but I hope you click over and watch that clip. It's funy. So here is my anolgy...

Ed became Simple Jack. He went "full retard" on Alive. On Mental Jewelry and Thrwoing Copper, Ed basically said "Reject all conditioning and beliefs. Reject the teachers and preschers and politicians. Find the truth that lies beneath everything by quieting your mind and finding it within yourself." SS didn't really get into the spirituality all that much. On TDTH Ed basically said "I've spent some time in the desert and I found 'The One' and it was nothing like what I expected". On TDTH, V and SFBM, Ed talked about an open, universal, all-inclusive, non-denominational spirituality that was acceptable to everyone and can be interpretted in many different ways by everyone. It was creative and nuanced. At its best points, it was very artistic. On Alive, he is specifically and expressly singing about the holy Eucharist, Jesus, zion, Rome, Christianity, turning his life over to Jesus, and eternal life. There is no room for interpretation. There is no accessibility for anyone outside of that box. He went all in with Christianity. And it limited the artistic expression. The subtlety, metaphor, symbolism and creative expression is gone. He went over the line and went "full retard". As Robert Downey Jr.'s character said in Tropic Thunder when he was talking to Ben Stiller about his "Simple Jack" character: "You went full retard man! You never go full retard." Ed went from Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man to Sean Penn in I Am Sam to Simple Jack. Now he is Simple Jack. Or at least as clueless as the Ben Stiller character in Tropic Thunder who is the actor that plays Simple Jack.

Again, I am speaking symbolically here, to illustrate the underlying principle at work here. I am not condoning the use of the word retard or calling anybody an actual retard. I just think that the movie reference is apt and it is a really funny scene.

When does Ed talk about the holy Eucharist in Alive? Some of ALive is very Christian other while songs are open to interpratation. I'm in the minority on this site, but I really liked Alive. I liked SFBM too, and feel each LIVE album had its own charm and great songs. LIVE is the only band that I've ever been able to listen to almost every album all the way through without stopping.

HE talks about it on Eat You Love,

Oh Lord, I need your Bread, I want to eat your Love

The one song that I like musically but not lyrically.

From last years thread: Fish nails it, I reference it.

QUOTE
Is "Eat Your Love" a reference to communion or the eucharist in the Christian religion? If so, I am getting pretty fed up (no pun intended) with the overt Christianity. A New World and Sweet Surrender sound pretty Christian-themed. That is not what I signed up for when I became an Ed fan.

QUOTE
Ugh. Drinking water and wine. Eating your love in the form of bread. Grace. Zion. This is getting into wierd territory. Ed has literally become the exact person he railed against 20 years ago. I'm not judging that. I'm just saying that if Ed Kowalczyk of 1992 knew of an artist that was solo Ed Kowalczyk singing about communion wafers and holy wine and grace, he would have been angry at him.

On the bright side, I look forward to hearing songs in the future about Ed's confessions. Those should be pretty juicy. And a rock'in tune about pedophile priests would be interesting.

QUOTE
This world is crazy and I gotta lot of things to say
There's so much more to love and it may be giving you away
I used to think I had the answers, I got turned around
I used to listen to music, now I hear the sound

Oh Lord
Ooooooooo
I need your bread
I wanna eat your love
Ooooooooo
I need your bread
Your words life and love to me Lord
Ooooooooo
I need your bread
I wanna eat your love
