Here is an analogy for what happened to Live on the last 3 albums, and why they were no longer a success (to speak in Nick's terms) after TDTH.

Roy Halladay is the best pitcher in baseball. When he is pitching, he is unbelievable.

Roy Halladay's batting average is .070. For those who don't know baseball - that is really bad. A decent batting average is .300. I am sure that Roy Halladay would struggle playing the outfield or any other infield position or catcher. But he is a great pitcher and you value him on the team. But you field 9 players on the baseball field to play the game.

Roy Halladay is the best pitcher in all of baseball and he makes the most money on the team. Halladay is arguably the most valuable players on the team. But he is a team player. He doesn't have a huge ego. He values the contribution of the other players and knows that in order for the team to succeed, each player must do his component part. Heck, the catcher, Carlos Ruiz, calls the pitches that Halladay throws, and Roy Halladay trusts Ruiz and throws the pitches that he tells him to throw. And it has worked out pretty well for Halladay. Halladay has showered Ruiz with gifts for being a great catcher and enabling Halladay to do what he does so well.

Now what would happen if Roy Halladay took over the whole team and dictated to everyone how to play their positions? What if he became the batting coach and told Ryan Howard how to hit the ball? Roy Halladay is a great pitcher, but he bats .070. What if he told Victorino how to judge fly balls and ignored every pitch call that Ruiz makes from behind home plate? Batters bat. Catchers catch. And Pitchers pitch. If your pitcher is telling your batters how to bat, the team will suck.

Ed Kowalczyk was (was but not "is") the Roy Halladay of singing and lyrics. When he was writing lyrics and singing them, he was unbelievable. Then he got a huge ego. He took credit for all of the accomplishments of the team. He made sure that the cover of the team photo was just Ed. And worst of all, he told the bassist, the drummer and the guitarist how to do their jobs. But Ed is no better at working drumming magic, bass or guitar riffs into a song than Roy Halladay is at the plate, batting .070. And giess what happens when your posterboy does this? The team loses.

Now Ed is fielding a baseball team with Roy Halladay and the bad news bears. Roy Halladay is in charge of everything. And you know what you have? You have a team named "Alive" that is batting .070 with a great vocalist.

You know what CCP did? They went out and got Cliff Lee as a pitcher (in this story, Cliff Lee will be played by Kecvin Martin). They named their new team The Gracious Few. And they have a complete, functioning team that makes magic on the field.

Now it appears that they have cut Roy Halladay from the original team named Live because he ran amuck and they are replacing him with Cole Hamels. Stay tuned to find out who will be playing the part of Cole Hamels in this story.

I know - I started to mix my metaphors at the end there. I did that to drive the point home (Get it? Pun intended!).

Good analogy but to be like Live's situation, Halladay would have to lose his ability to pitch or win games, then dictate to everyone how everything is going to be done. The only thing is, his teammates, managers, owners, fans, peers, everyone would hold him accountable and he wouldn't be able to get away with it. He'd be off the team in no time. And if his talents were diminished, he'd find himself out of the league or maybe languishing on some farm team somewhere. Kind of like Ed right now. I think the only mistake C,C,P may have made is giving Ed so much slack. But then again, they were lifelong friends so I think they figured he'd have to come to his senses eventually. Obviously he didn't and he's gone. Good riddance.
