I noticed on youtube that Shit Towne and Top were played recently.

What's up with that?

I just wanted to cry when I heard the band play Shit Towne. This is just really nothing like LIVE played it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqLz8yc9c6A

Top was quite changed from the original (less hard, more up beat and Ed on a [semi] acoustic guitar?):

I´m oke with Ed not forgetting his past, but just don´t touch any fan favorites! Just keep it at I Alone, All over You and Heaven or something (if he really needs to cover something at all).

I want to see an artist share their emotion and there "here and now" with us on stage. Playing a song like shit town with a big ol' smile is obviously "just for the fans", that's what nostalgia acts do. As terrible as Ed's new material is I'd rather him stick to that because that's what he's about now. That's what he can sing with heart and make me believe its where he's at. Although maybe singing shit town is an exact indication of where he's at - being disengenuine.
I recently heard an interview with Aussie band The Living End where they stated they're probably going to stop playing the song that made them famous back in the day because it's sung from the point of view of someone in about year 10 at school. They said it's beginning to feel weird on stage. Yes it's popular with the fans, but I think people have to respect them respecting themselves. I'm sure they will play it again (and probably won't pull it from the set just yet) but that's most likely when they do take the turn into a nostalgia act.
So is Ed already committing himself to being that over the hill and traveling on a "best of" tour? No he's still bringing out new music. So it just pains me seeing him bastardise these old songs, just let then be if you can't present then the way they're meant to be. I understand that artists can change songs too and that they can evolve. Look at Operation Spirit and the dark edge it took in the SS tour or the electro keyboard it had post 2000. But it wasn't until Ed changed the lyrics of it that it changed the essence if what the song was about. Shit town being sung with a massive grin is changing the essence of what that song is about, it's not just visual, you can hear that smile.
