How much of the blame could be put on hockey itself? By that I mean does hockey do a great job of trying to get into different markets or to appeal to a broader audience? I am asking, I do not know. And if they did would it even matter?

Soccer tried to. There was a big push. They brought Beckham over and even ESPN was a part of it. Beckham was the new Favre on ESPN. The effort didn't really seem to gain any traction though.

It is interesting. I do know basketball is always trying to reach other markets and so is football. They are always trying to appeal to a new demographic in attempt to increase the fanbase. Sometimes they fail and sometimes they don't. Hell, recently you see the NBA and NFL games being played in Europe.

But if you hate ESPN you might as well hate the other companies that use NBA players like Dwayne Wade to sell cell phones. There are a billion of companies like that and they rarely use hockey players. Bastards.
