Finally...the way hard-hitting rock n' roll was meant to be heard! The Gracious Few's album will be released on 12" double gatefold vinyl exclusively at independent record stores next Tuesday, February 15th! I disagree on W,D. In any way it was mastere, it brings the spirit of the dirty, torn apart 90s in it

I actually think Ed is spot on here. Distinct overcompression was a part of the grunge era, and I would argue, sound.

It is nowhere near as bad as the latest Metallica album.

yeah, you're right....and that's why Nevermind and In Utero were minimally compressed. Same thing with Siamese Dream from SP and Superunknown from Soundgarden and Core from STP. And MJ. Is it just a coincidence that all these albums were put out in 1994 or prior? And it is it a coincidence that most the "grungy" albums from 1994 and after all of a sudden got compressed? There was just a sudden shift in sound 3 years into the grunge movement?

AND, that's why SFBM was compressed to hell too....because it's a pretty grungy record. BOP too. Get Ready from SFBM is LOUDER THAN PLOTR!!!!

I have mastered zero records. But I also know what sounds like garbage.

Agreed it is nowhere near the latest Metallica album....few are.

I'm glad TC sounds good to your ears. I wish I could say the same. Some tracks sound OK, I agree....but ones like WD, Stage.....they are compressed and poor sounding.

It is true my post wasn't overly obvious, but in actuality, I do production and mixing professionally. Most folks around here are aware of that so I thought it would be pretty obvious that I was picking on my boy Ed. My bad.

You are right to analyze compression in mastering, but I think coming down hard on one side of the "brick wall" debate is a bit harsh. Some albums sound great when they are hyped and compressed to crap, that is just how they are supposed to sound. As long as they aren't distorted it is all good in the hood. Otherwise, restraint is a very good thing in mixing and mastering.

I do though, think that somehow your copy of TC is different than mine. When did you purchase it?

I've had several copies, the newer ones sound worse than the ones released in the 90s. The tapes get copied between cd replicators as the years go by and the pressings are.versioned. see how some of.the classics are reissued and remastered. Live's cd's haven't been to my knowledge.

exactly my point. Nothing has been done to them. The easiest way to find out is to rip WD to your computer, download Audacity and import it to look at the waveform. I am 99% certain yours is going to look the same as mine.
