as for review of the Chameleon show (I've been driving home from Pittsburgh all day...traffic sucks) I was really excited about the show & in no way was I disappointed. I really enjoy the Alive songs in concert & I didn't notice a huge difference in the Live songs that were played (from when played w CCP I mean). The Chameleon was HOT - more than usual & Ed & most of the crowd were sweaty & gross (those us of near the stage). I thought Ed's voice was solid & probably would've given the show a 7 of 10. The effect of having a backing band instead of a collaborative band is a general decrease of energy, which is actually probably the biggest difference I noticed between Ed solo w band & Live.
& then Sunday came & I ran into Ed & Ramy before the show. Both in great moods & very gracious (no pun intended I promise) to those of us who chatted w them. I'd never been to the altar bar before & love the small stage & intimate feel. Ed almost stepped on my fingers twice during the show while I leaned against the stage. The setlist was the same as Friday but there was sooo much more joy on Eds face. & maybe because it wasn't a furnace in there he seemed to have much more energy. He smiled the whole time, even when his acoustic wouldn't agree to be tuned & Ramy had to have his bass drum replaced (also later needed I think a snare drum replaced). He joked a lot, & sheepishly made fun of himself when he forgot the opening line to Heaven. The guitarist at one point played with a violin bow which I enjoyed, but my friend said she missed the edginess of CT's guitar. The bassist & guitarist were tucked back on stage as you can see in those great pics & that was weird for me, but again is part of the backing band dynamic. I'm still getting used to that dynamic (I'd seen Live 30 times so I'm used to CT stomping around. Sonically I don't dislike the new musicians take on the Live songs at all. In fact I liked it all a lot. Ed's incredible energy & the obvious fun he was having made the show a 9 of 10. I had to stop comparing it to Live shows because they are different but equally awesome.
After saying all of this I do need to say that there are some songs I don't think these musicians should ever play...Gas He'd comes to mind...in fact most of SS should probably not be played (unless I'm grossly underestimating them). (also, when I go see TGF I really hope Kevin leaves some songs alone.)
Overall I had a great weekend & was thrilled to have the two shows bookend my fun. I will absolutely see them again.
