Thanks everyone for the info.

Hoodie: What were the highlights for you? I'm really into a lot of the bands at Lolla this year (Yeasayer, Mumford, Cribs, National) and am curious what you thought.

Here's some press I've found about Ed's set:

Heard a bit of Peanut Butter Wolf‘s set at Perry’s before seeing the end of Ed Kowalczyk‘s at Kidzapalooza. Closing with “Lightning Crashes”, from his old band Live, seemed an odd choice, with the lyrics of “her placenta falls to the floor” and all. I had the chance to interview Kowalczyk later on in the day inside the media area and that feature will be up in the near future.

Ed Kowalczyk played three songs on the Kidz stage, two from his days as the frontman in Live, “Heaven” and “Lightning Crashes,” as well as “Grace,” the first single from his new solo record, “Alive.” Afterward, the singer sat down to talk about a number of topics, including the acrimonious dissolution of his former band, which was so nasty that guitarist Chad Taylor said, “I can’t ever see myself working with Ed, let alone ever being in the same room with him.”

“I don’t really want to get into the negativity surrounding that, and for me the door is always open for a reunion,” said Kowalczyk. “But going solo is about challenging myself and embracing growth as an artist.”

The North American leg of his solo tour kicks off in Philadelphia Sept. 16 at the Theatre of Living Arts, and Kowalczyk couldn’t be more thrilled to be starting it here.

“In Live, we adopted Philly as our hometown, and I have so many great memories of playing there,” he said. “It’s exciting to get back into small places like the TLA and create a more intimate atmosphere again with the fans. It’ll be a reconnection.”

I made my way to the Kidzapalooza stage to watch former Live frontman Eddie Kowalczyk (who will henceforth be referred to as “Eddie K,” since typing “Kowalczyk” might give me a headache), serenade a few hundred children and fans with three acoustic offerings.

Eddie K has recently been touring in support of his solo album, “Alive,” while Live is on hiatus. At this point, the relevance of Live, and Eddie K for that matter, is entirely based on nostalgia. Eddie K did not disappoint, proving he still has an impressive vocal range (leading me to deduce that he must not be a smoker) and concluding his short set with an acoustic version of Live’s bread-and-butter, “Lightning Crashes.”

As enjoyable as it was to see Eddie K as part of the festivities, all his set did was make me long to hear a full band performance. The fact that he was only at the festival to perform a 15-minute acoustic set on the kid’s stage was also curious. Is Kowalczyk simply at the point in his career where he enjoys doing that sort of thing for fun, or was he so desperate to be part of the festival that he would take any slot on any stage?

There was little time to ponder about the relevance of a largely forgotten 1990s frontman, because it was time to go back even further to the 1980s and see what Devo had to offer.
