Just wondering if anyone knew the answer?

In the end, cater to the market if you want to make money, cater to the music if you want to be an artist. Ed does the former, TGF do the latter, simple. Whilst I think "The Few" would be the best choice in terms of fitting in (and that it's also one of my favorites), i think whatever they choose will hold credibility.

I disagree with the either/or aspect of this point of view.

Ed for example... If he was simply catering to the market in order to make money, I dont believe that we would see the Christian 'theme' present in Alive. Nor would we hear the happy, smiley, oohhh-ing and ahh-ing throughout Alive. I feel that he made this one as an artist. And like most any artist (at least one who doesnt demand to be paid by the government, we'll save that for an off-topic thread), he'll be marketing his 'product' in order to make a living.

TGF... I think they probably made theirs from the artist point of view as well. I've only heard Honest Man and Tredecim. As with Ed, its simply my opinion that what I've heard is not going to appeal to a large market. But they are making music that they want to make. And in the end, they will market it to the masses and hope for the best.

All these artists need/want to make money, right? I hope they all make millions! I know I'm making my contributions towards that.

I personally don't care what they make, so long as they get what they deserve. I don't think Ed's work warrants millions, but each to their own I guess.

I think Ed catered hugely towards being marketable. He's tapped into the christian market well, and he's turned himself into an "Idol" ... the slight instrumental pauses before a chorus kicks in like in Stand and Grace and such just reeks of commericalised pop rock and always feels like it's there to try and emphisise how "powerful" the chorus is .. it just comes off as forced and fake without actually being the genuine thing. I think he knows exactly what he was doing, bringing Daughtry over for some help like he did sounds about right too. Nick also wets himself over anything Ed and Nick won't touch anything that isn't marketable mainstream with a 50 foot pole, so that says something I think.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to make money, don't get me wrong, I just don't think it should be at the expense of your artistic intergrity.

Yes, to each his own.
