Honestly, my response was pretty blah. I was happy that they broke up since the quality of their work (and the imagination in their releases) had been dwindling for some time. I took the news in stride, as I had been expecting it. They seemed to be drifting farther apart with each passing year, and Ed was taking too much of a centre stage. I thanked them for 4 great albums, 2 mediocre ones, and 1 utter failure. Overall, Live became a doomed project. And, the fans didn't help! Yes, I'll attack the fans! How many of us kept holding out for "Throwing Copper 2"? We knew it wouldn't happen. These guys were way past the mid-'90s post-grunge phase and so was every other band. To maintain any merit in the music world Live had to adapt to changing trends, but the trends that sprung up in the aftermath of the "alternative" scene had no room for Live. The late-'90s were dominated by rap-core and boy/girl bands. The early 2000s saw a huge rise for both groups, but also gave rise to the teen-pop soloists (Britney, Justin, etc...). Not to mention hip-hop saw a new wave with the r&b club hit thing. (Ever go to a club in 2003? You couldn't hide from it with an invisible cloak!) These things dominated the airwaves. Live didn't stand a prayer. And, without being inundated with their style of music every day, I think the band gradually lost its connection to itself and tried to become something they fundamentally could not be. They were not made to survive the transition from post-grunge to what we have today. They're not a 1-hit-wonder. They're maybe a 10-hit wonder. But, they had no chance of adapting their style to what the mainstream dictated was hot.

So yeah, I was pleased to see Live quit. A little disappointed that they didn't get to say that they quit while they were ahead, but pleased that they didn't further embarrass themselves with countless more mundane records.

Thunder and lightning outside. No time to spellcheck. Just posting.

That was my general response on the breakup as well. I'm just glad I went along on the ride while it lasted. In my opinion, they released 5 great albums and 2 utter failures (V and SFBM). Overcome was the only great song that came out of those failures. I'm actually glad they went their own way. And I hope Ed continues to write his own music. I like his new album and he hope he writes more songs like Eat Your Love.

Btw, Swami, are you aware Ed released a solo album? I was looking for your review one day, you seem to be one of the rational ones around here, and I noticed you only post in Live Central. That would be pretty funny if you had no idea. lol.gif

I am aware of Ed's album Alive. However, I'm in between jobs and can't buy it. I've heard Grace about 16,780 times and I love the song. Very latter-day Ed. August 3rd I intend to be employed again and thus making money. I no longer collect, but damned if I won't buy the main releases! I'll be picking up Alive as soon as it's within a reasonable budget for me. Same as The Gracious Few's forthcoming album. Having said that, I might just go ahead and torrent Ed's record for the time being. Just to hear it, y'know?
