This is an interview of Ed with Faceculture. He was interviewed late 2008 there too, and that was one of the most revealing interviews ever maybe, ed talking so much about ANTHING Live related, how he met Pat, Chad, Chad, playing thier first songs, really nice.

Now they interviewed him again, and this must be the uhm... let's say most confronting interview since Ed's gone solo. I even felt a little sad for Ed. Only seen the first part of 5 so far, but the interviewer kept asking about the split up, why he wanted 100.000 lead-singer bonus, etc. Ed only says it's one big mistake and misunderstood, and wants to talk about the creative aspect of the new album.

There was a link to something on mediafile, but there is nothing at the other end anymore.

So we have to go with a transcription. Here is dangum's transcription:

Leno: I can see why it's an anthem. Boy, it's a beautiful song.

Kowalczyk: Yeah, you know it's funny as I wrote it a year ago. And umm. it's just somehow the lyric and everything and what our fans are getting from it, is just so poignant right now. It's wild.

Leno: What was your inspiration for the song? Was it?

Kowalczyk: You know, about a year ago I was coming off a tour and I was like decompressing on sort of like in a retreat mode and you know like chilling out, camping, that kind of thing (laughs) and umm, so, but I was staying in a hotel actually a couple of the nights so I was chilling and going back to the hotel and umm a couple nights in a row I just turned on the TV like CNN or something, all in this state of bliss but you know at the same time seeing what's going on in the world and you know some kind of terrorist thing going on in Israel and it was... so the song was written in the sort of like idea of like pain and bliss all happening at the same time which... I think really says a lot what we've been going through as a nation.. you know.. there's this... the pain of it all and there's this overwhelming coming together and compassion and so people are just getting that from this song.. it's, it's, it makes uh... you know as an artist it doesn't get any better than that.

So, since we all trust dan, we can agree Ed never said on Leno that he wrote Overcome after 9/11.
And I hope we can stop the "Ed is a lying liar because he said on Leno he wrote Overcome inspired by 9/11" cause someone is just going to sound foolish.

Now, since copies of performances from 1998 are floating around (also kindly provided by dan) obviously Ed wrote Overcome then, or at least the lyrics. And just as obviously, from the performances, it's not exactly the same song as the album version. If someone wants to make a big deal of that - and I'm sure someone will - no one can stop you, but is it really such a BFD?
