Article on a dutch newswebsite. Translated it, but due to fast typing, there might be small errors in it.

Ed Kowalczyk still has things to tell...

Hellendoorn- After almost 25 years, last november the band Live split up. Singer Ed Kowalczyk started a solocarreer and releases his solo-album Alive this week. NU.nl spoke to him about Live, faith and his solo-album.

Ed Kowalczyk just finished at Dauwpop Festival in Hellendoorn when NU.nl interviews the now 38 year old singer. But not before he made time to spend with the fanclubmembers.

"They're what's it all about in the end," says the american when he sits down with a beer in hand. "In fact I am just a boring rockstar. Every once in a while I drink a beer, but that's it", he laughs.

Kowalczyk has had a bad year. After an arguement with Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer and Chad Gracey, Live split up in november last year. The singer went solo, while the other 3 menbers went on as 'The Gracious Few'.

Break
Questions about Live are avoided bij Kowalczyk, he'd rather talk about his fans, or his upcoming solodebut Alive. Nonetheless we can't avoid the topic: Did Live break up or did they take a break? "Live took a break indefinately", Kowalcyk replies.

Eventhough the chance of Live reuniting seems really slim, considering the statement by guitarist Chad Taylor on his website. In which he called Kowalczyk a fraud/cheater. At the end of May Taylor, Dahlheimer and Gracey even sued their frontman.

Passion
'I don't wanna close those doors behind me or exclude options", is all Kowalczyk wants to say about that subject. "I started a new chapter, can feel passion and excitement again. By doing the same thing for years, I lost contact with the music."

Not just on a musical level things changed, on a spiritual level as well. "Spirituality has always been important to me. I was raised Roman-Catholic and recently regained that faith."

"It helped to me to get in contact with my soul, necessary to get things across. After 20 years I still believe I have something to say/tell."

Soul
Eventhough the music on his solo-album isn't that different from what we're used to from Live. "I am who I am, I am not gonna sing a different tune all of a sudden. Musically it seems like what I did with Live, because that's the music I like. It's my signature. To me the soul and energy of the music have changed."

Working with other musicians provided that new impulse. "It brings inspiration and different points of view. They interpret music in another way than I have been used to for 20 years. It are subtle changes, but that made me rediscover myself as an artist and refound my passion for music."

Stuck in a rut
Because, the american acknowledges, he got stuck in a rut with Live. "As an artist you gotta make sure that you're not being predictable or plan too many things. You have to break free from that and keep challenging yourself. And that's what I am doing now."

Does Kowalczyk have any other challenges? "I'd love to start a supergroup like Them Crooked VUltures or Chickenfoot. I BBQ a lot with Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine. Maybe it's an idea to talk about it with him, haha."

Alive is relased on june 25th. Kowalczyk will be on Bavaria Open Air in Lieshout (august 28th), Vredenburg, Utrecht (august 29th), Paradiso, Amsterdam (september 1st) and Oosterpoort Groningen (september 5th)
