Candlebox + Live = The Gracious Few in York PA

Candlebox + Live = The Gracious Few

The Gracious Few is a new band comprised of members of two of the 90’s best and most successful acts, Candlebox and Live. Singer Kevin Martin and touring rhythm guitarist Sean Hennesy have joined forces with the music of Live – guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey. Last night, the band performed a free, surprise show in Live’s hometown of York, PA. The show was announced the day before via various online sources.

I found myself between a couple of long-time fans who had driven 2 hours to attend the show on one side, and on the other side, a group of self-described “40-something hot mamas” who were only out for the evening and were surprised to find the club packed on a Thursday night. Having a disparate group of attendees, combined with the fact that the debut album will not be released until sometime this summer, made for an interesting test case. How would a crowd respond to people they knew playing songs they had never heard before?

If last night’s show is any indication, The Gracious Few can take this thing anywhere they want to take it. Their sound does not mimic either of their previous bands. Perhaps their only link to their past is the dramatic nature of the music, which is one of the reasons for its popularity. The only way to describe this is to call this one talented rock and roll band. The vibe shifts from heavy to moody to bluesy to jazzy to funky and back again. Sean Hennesy truly shines, as this is not a rhythm-lead setup, but a dual guitar assault with enough wicked riffs and sick solos to please any shred-head.

The set list included what seemed to be all of the new songs expected to be released on the album, along with a funky version of Far Behind and an intense Lakini’s Juice, both of which drew the biggest ovations. But the new songs also went over very well with the crowd. As the 90 minute set ended, the place erupted in a chant of ‘One more song!” but the band had successfully delivered, and promised to return to the road in the fall, when their fans will know all the songs and sing along. I for one will be playing the album repeatedly once it comes out, until I know each note and every beautiful lyric by heart. The chorus of the closing number says it best… “I wanna feel alive. I wanna sing my song.”

Check out some photos from the secret show.

One way to save them is to use Alt+Printscreen to copy what you see on your screen, then paste the picture into Microsoft Paint, crop out the stuff around the pic and save it however you want.
