so you think the norm is that non die-hard fans rather see a band that they dont know any songs of than bands they know a few songs of?

It took me awhile to process what you meant by that. But all I'm saying is that it's silly to only want to go to a gig if you can be promised to hear all the hits.
For example, I'm going to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in July ... I wouldn't say I'm a super fan, but I like what I have heard so far. My knowledge of them is limited, there are 4-5 songs of theirs I really really love, but I'm not going to be put off by the fact that they may not play those songs. They might play songs I don't know and I might really dig them and get into it. Nick seems to act like people need to be assured that they can sing along to all the songs on the night to be able to go and have a good time .. I just think that is an incredibly close minded view and attitude towards music.

When Live hit Starland in 2009, the crowd was dead for the first half of the show, which contained: Hold Me Up, Gas Hed, Top among other obscure songs that hardcores have been dying to hear. Once Live played their hits the second half of the show, the entire crowd ate it up.

The hits are what gives the show energy. The more energy the crowd has, the better the band usually performs.

The people who will buy Alive or TGF's album will be miniscule to the people who already are very familar with the hits of Live and Candlebox. Not playing the hits will suck the energy out of a concert(ask the Counting Crows).

Sorry to single this out, but it's making me all cross-eyed.

If a band has a well written song and is into what they are playing the crowd will feel that energy, hardcore or not. No one knew who the hell Live were back in the early nineties but people paid attention when they got on stage because they played their asses off.

Though, to be perfectly fair, more people have jammed a stick up their ass, or jammed the one they have farther in it seems these past years. At many of the recent concerts I've attended people have been real uptight, even in or near mosh areas. Booze helps alleviate that problem but I still wonder why people put down the cash for a concert ticket and then act like they're at a freaking board meeting.

Regardless, the hits aren't the be-all, end-all for concert energy. The band, especially the lead singer, can keep the crowd pumped and into the music even on obscure songs.
