Ed Kowalczyk to headline Light of Day benefit in Asbury Park

Best known as the frontman for the band Live, Ed Kowalczyk is working on his first solo album, and is likely to preview some of those songs at his Jan. 16 performance at Asbury Park’s Paramount Theatre.

He will appear there as part of the tenth annual series of Light of Day concerts, which raise money for the fight against Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. Over the last decade, more than $1 million has been raised by these concerts, which have featured Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, Lucinda Williams, John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, and countless other musicians.

There will be six shows at six different Asbury Park venues in January.

On the afternoon of Jan. 16, the Wonder Bar will present bands such as the Madhatters and the Roxwells, and that night, Kowalczyk will be joined at the Paramount by Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, Jesse Malin, Willie Nile, Joe D’Urso and Stone Caravan, and others.

Jan. 17, singer-songwriters will team up for collaborative sets of music and conversation at the Watermark (noon), the Langosta Lounge (3 p.m.) and Tim McLoone’s Supper Club (6 p.m.). Nicole Atkins, Joe D’Urso, Lisa Lowell and Joe Rapolla will be among the performers at Tim McLoone’s.

Great show!!! Too bad Ed's set was so short. Since Ed was the headlining act I figured and was told earlier in the week that he would play last. Then.....Bruce Springsteen screwed that all up!!! He may be old but damn he can still rock !!! Don't ask me what songs he played cause I am not a big fan I only recognised Pink Cadillac.

Bruce Springsteen performs at Light of Day in Asbury Park on Saturday night

One of those special nights happened in Asbury Park on Saturday night.
The first of hopefully many more special nights of the new decade.
A tan and very fit looking Bruce Springsteen played with Willie Nile, Jesse Malin and later did 11 songs with Joe Grushecky til 1:10 a.m.
The 10th Anniversary Light of Day shows were defintely among the best Bruce appearances of his seven total now. This was the first one that with Bruce that wasn't in a bar setting, instead at the 1,600 seat Paramount Theatre and I think that may have worked to the advantage of a better overall performance by Bruce, Joe Grushecky and the other musicians, as they had more room overall on a bigger stage.

Rumors had been flying toward the past few days that Bruce would definitely be playing at this year's Light of Day, he did not performed at the past two.
Bruce showed up for a soundcheck around 5 p.m. and rehearsed Atlantic City, Another Thin Line, Johnny 99, Pink Cadillac, Working on a Dream, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Working on a Dream, Light of Day and Murder Inc. He also rehearsed "Broken Radio" with Jesse Malin.

Bruce first came on stage to jam with Willie Nile toward the end of Willie's set. By then, the close-to-capacity crowd knew it was going to be one of those magical evenings at the Jersey Shore.

Jesse Malin had Bruce come on stage for the last song of his set, and they performed "Broken Radio" together, the first time the song has ever been performed live by Bruce and Jesse. Very nice with a violin player.

After a nice solo set by Eddie K. from the band Live, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers were the final act to play.
After four songs by Joe, around midnight, he said "It's star time here in New Jersey, the man who brought you such hits as 'Born to Run' etc." and Joe brought on Bruce.
If any of you saw the paparazzi photos of Bruce from St. Bart's this past week, you know he's in great shape and he was fit and tan tonight.

1. Atlantic City
Very hot version. Really well played by Joe and Bruce

2. Code of Silence
The song co-written by Bruce and Joe. They played off each other very well. At the end of the song Bruce said "Thank you for coming out for LIght of Day. I've known Bob Benjamin for a long time, since 1977."

3. Johnny 99
Nice guitar work by Bruce.

4. Never Be Enough Time
From Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers' 1995 album American Babylon. Bruce has played this before with Joe at other appearance and Light of Days. I've always loved seeing this performed by both of them.

5. Darkness on the Edge of Town
Nice version. Bruce came up to the front of the stage while doing one of his guitar solos toward the end.

6.Talking to the King
A song written by Joe Grushecky, and the opening track of the Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers album End Of The Century which was released in September 1992.
Another song played in the past by Bruce and Joe together. Nicely done.

7 . Pink Cadillac
Maybe the highlight of the night. Bruce said: "Ladies and gentleman, photographer extraordinaire Danny Clinch will join us on the harmonica."
Danny's harmonica added a lot to the start of the song. Bruce had a lot of fun on the song and so did the audience.
Bruce brought out some of the other musicians to play toward the jam at the end of this.

8. Murder Incorporated
Actor Vincent Pastore, "Big Pussy" from the Sopranos, came onstage and sang backup vocals on this. It was really cool to see.

9. Another Thin Line
One that doesn't get played too often by Bruce. Nice to see.

10. Light of Day
Bruce brought out Bob Benjamin. Bruce and Joe had the crowd sing "Happy Birthday" to Bob, although his birthday was really in November, but it was celebrated on Saturday.
Bob gave a short speech about this being the 10th Light of Day shows.
All the other musicians joined for a big jam session. At one point Bruce went to the back of the stage by the drum setup and all the musicians parted as he came back up to the center.

11. Twist & Shout
Final song of the evening, Again all the musicians onstage and Bruce taking charge.

According to my friend Ted, Joe Grushecky's set timed in at 1:36 and Bruce was onstage for 1:11 of that.

Great night of music overall. Second of two great nights and it continues on Sunday with some performances at venues on the Asbury Park boardwalk.
