Yeah, Gene for sure, but is it his own stuff or a sub-category of KISS merchandise? And KISS does sell coffee -- and jalapeno ketchup?!

I think people are just making asses of themselves complaining about Ed selling stuff - although the prices he's charging are another matter entirely - because Live sold merchandise. Every freaking band and artist with a website sells merchandise off their official website.
Check out the massive U2 store at u2.com, or Rage Against the Machine at ratm.com and see. Or basically google the name of any band or artist and the word "merchandise". The difference is that for most of other artists the merchandise is stuff like tshirts, hats, posters. (Rage Against the Machine sells holiday ornaments, though. I did not expect *that*)

It is true that musicians make a lot of their money from merchandise. It isn't the merchandise, it is the kind of merchandise he is selling. Music, shirts, etc., great! Coffee and pendants is just moving into a whole other realm of selling out.

Maybe I've always misunderstood Ed's lyrics, but what is frustrating to me is that he used to write lyrics that were counter-cultural and often anti-materialistic. That is a message I always related to, but it seems he'd become the guy he used to sing against. I can deal with the religion thing, but his "Christianity" seems to have more to do with selling shit than anything else.

When people get "inspired by Jee-sus" the results are always terrible. It's kinda like saying "I can't think for myself" and I consider it a huge cop out when you are trying to write meaningful music.

Also, Jesus is really overdone... if Ed wrote an album about an inspiration ham & cheese sandwich he had and filled it with a bunch of metaphors about water and male/female relationships I think I would still be excited.

You're describing a caricature that's based off something like the Christian music industry. All that is, in my opinion, is the homogenization of Christianity. Done for the sole purpose of selling product. It's the same principle behind selling Christmas trees or egg nog around Christmas.

But to say that everything that results from someone who is supposedly/allegedly inspired by Jesus is terrible is just a tad short-sighted. C.S. Lewis is considered one of the greater thinkers of the 20th century (atheists on this board can disagree all they want...they can't deny his impact), so I hardly think he was one who didn't think for himself. Doyle Dykes is one of the best finger picking guitarists I've ever heard. Those are just two examples I can think of off the top of my head.

Who exactly considers C.S. Lewis to be one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century? Just because he has sold a ton of books doesn't make him a great religious thinker. He is really just a watered down version of several great theologians, not exactly a trailblazer.

Read some Paul Tillich, Karl Barth, Francis Schaeffer, Rufus Jones, etc. etc. C.S. Lewis couldn't hold a candle to any of those guys.

As for the Live/religion debate, their music has gotten undeniably worse as Ed has become more enthused about Jesus. Take it for what it's worth.
