Schubas was a cool venue. Sitting like an average local bar on a corner you might drive past it if you weren't paying attention. Long narrow bar and the room for the show is in the back. A lady told me they allow 200 people in. The stage was pretty small but the funny thing is there is no way to get on or off but to come down the stairs from the stage and go out a side door onto the sidewalk outside. Or else walk thru the crowd.
He came in the side door around 9:15 and played for about an hour and twenty or so.
It was almost a hundred in Chicago yesterday and Ed worked up a good sweat and you could literally see the sweat running down his arm and onto the stage. He used a towel to wipe off after about every song even though there was air and fans running in the place. He drank regularly from a bottle of water and had a glass of what he called "apple juice" sitting on a stool. Wasn't on the rocks so my guess was whiskey or something.
He was in a great mood and his voice and the music sounded wonderful. The crowd was very into it and you could tell he appreciated everyone singing along to the songs. He made no mention of anything Live or solo work. Did mention his website and twittering.
I especially liked 'Take Me Up To Zion' and told him so after the show. Said it was great to know and was looking forward to working on adding the band to it.
He messed up the lyrics around the beginning of 'Selling the Drama' and so he stopped and said since he was the only one in the building with a guitar he was gonna start over. Mentioned it would probably end up on youtube. And even he might add it.
He was joking around a lot and talking to the audience while he tuned his guitar and got the crowd laughing several times. He asked whether we wanted to hear 'Mirror Song' or 'Turn My Head' and when everyone started yelling their choice he said you know what I'll do them both.
Mentioned he has to sing 'daughters' now when singing 'Heaven' so he doesn't cause a sibling rivalry since when he wrote it he only had one daughter.
He took a one minute break outside after 'Dance With You' and then went back outside after the show was over. There were people looking for pics and autographs outside and he said he had to do an interview and that he'd be back. Walked back in the side door and thru the room and off to wherever. Came back a little bit later in a new shirt and then was busy singing autographs and taking pictures.
All in all a great evening with Ed. I saw him at the House of Blues in Chicago when he did a solo gig, which was only about 6 songs, when he was promoting Birds of Pray and that doesn't even compare to last night.
I'd check back to Schubas.com as they do have pictures and videos from past performances. And there is also a video interview section which I'm sure Ed will be a part of at some point.
After last night I'd highly recommend checking Ed out if you have the chance.
