I was thinking that, its just .. mind boggling that they had the acoustic guitar overdubbed and didn't even play the real thing ... soon it'll be like kareoke where Ed just sings over the music playing off an ipod .. hell they'll be miming soon now. First some people bitch about Live not playing Forever on Ellen, then when the band plays the song, those same individuals need to find something else to complain about.

For the first time playing Forever, the band did a good job. Whether they piped in the acoustic guitar or not, I've seen bands do much worse. I would wager to say that almost every band pipes in something or other when they perform. Its the way it goes. That said, Live is better than most when it comes to that.

I would wager to say that almost every band pipes in something or other when they perform. Its the way it goes. That said, Live is better than most when it comes to that.

also, we must remember that this was a tv performance. Maybe that's why they wanted to play 'safe' and Ed didn't wanted to play guitar so he could fully focus on singing the (not easy) song and performing (the reason Adam joins the band for a decade now). I know, that can't be an excuse (a good live band must play what they do on the record), but maybe it's because of the tv formance. Now I think about it: have you ever seen Ed playing a guitar when they played for television? I don't think so. But I agree with someone saying, that Chad or Adam could have done the acoustic part, but as I see them almost never holding an acoustic guitar, that would be weird as well.

However, maybe the live performances at shows will be different, and Ed will maybe just play the third, acoustic, guitar, just like he does when they perform Selling the Drama, The River, etc.

Now I think about it: have you ever seen Ed playing a guitar when they played for television?

Yes. They played on Sharon Osbourne's show with Shelby Lynne, Run Away. And to kind of prove your point, he actually failed to hit some notes pretty noticably, early on.
