Kevin Smith's upcoming movie, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, will include the Live song Hold Me up!

One single song reminded me how important it is to have great music in a film, and how often it’s the unknown songs that have the greatest effect.

I don’t want to ruin the film for anyone, but during an emotional scene between Zack and Miri, who are played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, the band Live has a song that fits so perfectly, it actually made my jaw drop.

With frontman Ed Kowalczyk’s intense vocals, layered on top of the band’s heavy guitar rhythms, the scene is about as perfect as it could be.

Looking through the press notes I found out that the song was called “Hold Me Up,” but as a devout Live fan I can definitely say I’ve never heard the song before.

Thankfully, director Kevin Smith was able to give a little insight into the song. Here’s what he had to say:

"It’s an old song that I first heard in ‘95, when we were putting together the Mallrats soundtrack. It was actually in the film for the first test screening, but Live decided they wanted to hold onto it as a potential single off their next album (which would follow Throwing Copper). When I was editing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the song had still never surfaced or been released, so I put in a request for it again. Again, I was denied.

Third time, apparently, was the charm. Needed a song for that sequence in Zack and Miri and remembered the Live track. This time, the band signed off on us using the track. Took 13 years, but was worth the wait."

I’m still a big fan of Live, but I have to admit, there’s an intensity to the song that doesn’t seem to exist in any of the band’s recent material. Hearing it in the film, I had a good idea it was from their Throwing Copper days, but now we just have to wait and see if the studio can get the rights to use the song on the soundtrack too. If the band is smart though, they’ll consent and promote the hell out of this song - it’s one of the most memorable scenes I’ve seen all week at TIFF, and I give nearly half of that credit to the song.

I do have to say in regards to the talk in this thread that this is some magically with held single from SS that I don't think this song would have ever been a true single (unless there is a different version than what I have). It's a very good song and I can see how portions of it could be used in a powerful way in a movie, but from start to finish it's not a single. The refrain is solid but the guitars and cord progression are average and the bridge (in my opinion) doesn't seem to flow with the rest of the song and actually detracts from it.

If the bridge is altered, however, it could be a different story.

Not to be inflammatory, but again, I totally disagree with you. It just seems that every single thing you say makes me laugh out loud. You talk like a guy who thinks he knows what he's talking about, but it's completely obvious you haven't a clue. My guess is that you never actually completed grade nine.

First off, name one single LIVE song where the chord progression and guitars are anywhere near ABOVE average? Just one song, PLEASE. Because there are none. The guitar work is average everywhere you look, on any level, on any song.

Second, do you have any clue what a bridge is? Do you know where it is in this song? Because the bridge I hear in this song is pretty fucking good. Better than any bridge in any Live song since TDTH at least. It's classic Live with Ed screaming "yeah yeah yeah yeah" Followed by some decent guitar work, leading beautifully back into the chorus. Saying this detracts from the song just makes me laugh out loud, again.

You are entitled to your opinions, but then again, so is just about everyone. The thing is, some people simply make no sense whatsoever and to me, you are one of those people. I sincerely feel sorry for your children if you ever have any. It's a laughing shame that people like you are actually allowed to vote. This song has a bridge? I thought a bridge was the section of the song that takes the lyrics back to the chorus. While the Yeah x4 part does do that he only does it once and I thought you had to have a bridge before every chorus if you were going to have one. Before the first chorus there is no bridge... it just kinda jumps in.
