I just got Rock Band for Xbox 360 for Xmas and it is one of the most fun games I ever played. I'm doing okay on easy leve and find it easier to songs that I'm familar with as long as the pitch isn't out of control.

Who has or has played this game and what do they think?

We almost got Guitar Hero for our 8 year old son for Christmas (he has Playstation 2) but we saw some kids younger than him acing it in Best Buy and it reminded me of the game Simon and looked like it'd get boring as hell fast, considering 5 year olds were doing it like it was nothing.
Anyway, my aunt teaches guitar, she gave me a Fender amp for him and I need to get him a guitar. Would Guitar Hero help him learn at all - or does he need a real guitar?

Guitar Hero on expert mode is sufficiently difficult (as a game), believe me; it certainly proves a challenge. Absolutely nothing like playing the real guitar though, except for maybe having to have a sense of rhythm. It uses a different set of co-ordination skills to the real guitar..

I got rock band for christmas, and it does rock! Pretty good song list, but there is a bunch of crap along with the good stuff. Playing the rock band guitar is almost nothing like real guitar (I play real guitar, but I'm not any good tongue.gif ). The drums ARE pretty similar to real drums, according to my brother though.

The drums are slightly more similar to the real thing than guitar.. but being a master at drums on rock band certainly wouldn't make you a good drummer.

Had to revive this thread.

This game is a lot of fun. Try playing bass on hard for songs like Blackened or And Justice For All from Metallica, it is crazy hard. The guitar is actually kind of similar except that you are hitting colored buttons instead of strings. The strumming is the same, just not nearly as much movement on the other hand.

My buddy, who is damn good on a real guitar, plays most of the songs on expert and the notes come unbelieveably fast. I can't believe he hits them the way he does. We play in his basement in a soundproof room on a system that pumps almost 1,500 watts. Dude has his system hooked up to his receiver and it pumps some serious sound.

I think Live would be a good fit for this game due to the difficulty of the vocals. But there are probably only a handful of songs that would be challenging on the instruments such as I alone, Stage and probably a few others.

I'll post the Wikipedia link that talks all about it tomorrow or something. It's too late now and I'm tired and high. strawberry.gif

I'm quite tired and high also- but not high enough to make any thing musically by Live even remotely difficult to play tongue.gif In guitar terms, there isn't a single song by them that is hard. (Though obviously performing them well is a different thing). Drums might be slightly harder on a couple of songs- namely White, Discussion.

I agree with you for the most part but there are a few songs that would be quite challenging all around from Live. On the hard level, Stage would offer a real challenge on drums, bass and especially vocals. The bass in that song gets drowned out quite a bit and people don't get to hear how cool it actually is in that song. Bass would offer quite a challenge on TBD as well on hard level I think. PLOTR would be pretty cool to play on bass as well. I think the most of Like I Do would be fairly difficult on drums on a higher level too. Susquehanna would be fun to play on both guitars. Lakin would be great because well, the song just straight out fucking rocks!

I agree that playing a real guitar uses a COMPLETELY different set of co-ordination skills as well. But fundamentally, the idea is basically the same. Gaining a sense of rhthym with the strumming and gaining the idea of some of the notes on a much smaller scale. Of course being able to play any given note on a particular fret would be much more difficult, but it does kind of give you an idea. I'd say the same thing goes for the drums. While it won't make you a good drummer, it does kind of give you the most basic foundation, even moreso than on guitar. Some songs, namely ones by rush, are fucking murder trying to keep rhthym on the foot pedal.

I'm a real novice on a real guitar but my buddy who I play with quite often, says that playing any given song on rock band at the expert level is much much harder than playing the same song on guitar. This coming from a guy who can listen to a riff once and play it instantly. He's even mastered a couple of Satriani's solo pieces and writes a lot of his own music. He also says that although it's harder, it's just not the same. A guy can master expert level on any song yet pick up the guitar and not have a fucking clue as to what he's doing.
