I found this connection made by Ed between Pain Lies On The Riverside and The River in an online article from the York Daily Record. I know a lot of you hate on The River, but it is one of my favorite +Live+ songs. Here is the connection he made for those interested.

True Live fans might wonder if the river talked about in the similarly titled song is the same as the one in Live's early hit, "Pain Lies by the Riverside." Kowalczyk said that they are one and the same, but that the songs have different messages.

"I think the river metaphor in 'Pain Lies by the Riverside' is the same," he said. "It's the pain where you're not going with the flow and stopped on the riverside.

"You're waiting somehow and the river is flowing, and it's representative of your life and process as a human being. ... I think the river in 'The River' is the same river. It's the flow of life and jumping in head first."

okay this is crazy. after posting that, i remembered a chapter of "Beyond Violence" by J Krishnamurti. This book is a series of lectures which took place in London in 1970. A questioner at the end of the lecture asks:

"Whatever I hear you say in this hall becomes so simple and easy to understand. But the moment I am outside I am at sea, and I do not know what to do when I am alone."

anyone see a connection here?

No question there is a huge connection. I've also ready a few of Krishnamuti's works. If you can find it, cause it's out of print, but pick up a copy of "You are the World". It was the first book Ed picked up about Krishnamuti and his philosophy. You will see some passages that were practically taken from the book and turned into the songs on Mental Jewelry. It's cool to ready then listen to Mental Jewelry at the same time.
