Listened to it for the first time in a long time and fell in love with it all over again. I want a discussion about this song, what it means to you, or at least what it might mean to the person who wrote it. Is it simply a well-tailored rock number that is bound by the limitations of a formula most easily reducible to “man loves woman”, or does it go deeper?

Many people see it as an incredibly religious song, some much the opposite. Is Ed talking about Jesus and the love he has for us, or is he telling us that it’s easier not to be wise about religion and finding your own way? (The album cover would suggest this). Is it just about a woman? Or, as I have mainly thought, is the song really as intimate as it says it is. A man who loves himself beyond all else.

I always remember seeing the video for I Alone on TV late one night. I'd seen Selling the Drama a couple of weeks before and seeing a complete madman dancing about with no shirt and hearing such a brilliant song on sealed my adoration of Live. lol.gif

In essence, the ambiguity and double entendre of the lyrics is what makes I Alone such a great song. Like a great piece of art, it's open to any number of interpretations. Another thing that makes it such a good song is you can palpably feel the emotion put into the song in every breath and chord... even if you don't know what the hell Ed is trying to say, you believe every word of it anyway!

[edit: GVB's post just shat all over my theory, so I've deleted it]

A Dutch dj, Paul Rabbering was talking about "I Alone" the other day.
Sadly I turned on the radio quiet late so that I realized at the end of the story that it was about "I Alone".

So I sent him an e-mail to ask what "I alone" was about.
He mailed me a small piece of an interview with Ed, in fact it was more a sort of a quote.

I copy and paste it here:

----------
The lyrics are a telling of the story in the Bible, Luke 8:22-25, inwhich Jesus calms a storm while he and his disciples are at sea. Thissong (like the story) proves the power of love.
