The spotlight has dimmed considerably, but according to Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk, the York foursome is better than ever.

"It's a really amazing thing to be in Live now," Kowalczyk said. "We've matured, but we still have a lot of energy onstage and there's more depth to a Live show."

From the band's origins as Public Affection, debuting at a middle school talent show, Live was arguably rock's biggest stars for much of the 1990s, with sold-out stadium shows around the globe, millions of records sold, No. 1 singles, appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and their own MTV "Unplugged" segment.

The former York High School classmates are all now in their 30s, married and three of them are parents.

Kowalczyk and drummer Chad Gracey live in southern California, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer once again calls York home and guitarist Chad Taylor is a longtime Lancaster resident.

Road trips are shorter but a summer tour is in the works, and Live's first full-length concert DVD will soon be shot at a show in Brazil.

Kowalczyk recently revealed all about the power of Live:

Q: There are more glamorous venues than the Chameleon Club but you must have some special feelings returning there.

A: It's really the club we cut our teeth in and established the very beginnings of our live show in the '90s. I remember first playing original material there and people really connecting with it. That was a real confidence booster.

Q: Live in the '90s seemed like such a whirlwind. What's the atmosphere in the band now?

A: You look at the usual trajectory of a band and you would say they peaked when they were selling the most records. That's not the case with us. We're still playing all over the world and deepened our own chemistry. We have more confidence. Now that the spotlight is not so glaring, in some ways it's better.

Q: How?

A: The lessening of the spotlight has helped me as a writer. Those subliminal pressures are gone. We have a fan base that is able to go with the flow and not have to be impressed. They're waiting for me to be me. That's a beautiful thing.

Q: Your music and career appeared to be all encompassing, now that you're husbands and parents how do you strike a balance?

A: When you're 22 or 23 it's you against the world with your buddies. We can't do that anymore. We've tempered that. But we actually play longer shows. I really chalk that up to a deep love of the music and the fans. The music itself is so intense, it's all or nothing lyrically, musically, sonically. You can't do 'I Alone' as a lounge act.

I was thinking the same thing Kymra. Kind of an odd statement to make.
