this band disgusts me.... the lead singer is claiming to be some sort of god or prophet in his lyrics. i'm sure most of you know all the words to their songs, so i don't need to do any cut and pasting, but if you're a Christian.... i don't see how you can not be offended by this band.
if you're not a Christian.... this band wont bother you. i know i'll get blasted by most on here, but if you think for one second that this band isn't (in a way) preaching a universal religion (not Christianity) then you're sadly mistaken... like i said... if you're not a Christian and don't claim to be.... rock on w/ this crap.... but if truly are a Christian then stand up for Jesus Christ and what He did for you and all mankind and walk away from this band. this band is dead to me.

You know somewhere I remember seeing a chair referenced as some sort of symbol as like a throne of judgement or something, but I can't seem to find where I got that idea again. I had looked it up because it was on the cover of this oddball book I saw in a bookstore once that had a bunch of symbols on it, and I immediately thought of this lyric. If this were the case, what Ed could be saying is that the judgement that traditional fundamental christianity is much like that of complete ransom. "Hey, we won't be raped like that". So, if you are like this gotriz guy you probably would find this lyric completely offensive, IF you want to believe what the church shoves down your throat(salvation solely through a professed belief). It's something else to take Jesus and the teachings and make them your own, find your OWN cross, deny yourself for the betterment of the world. The church for the most part puts a lot more control in there.

I interpret the lyrics you mentioned "and to Christ: a cross/and to me: a chair/I will sit and earn the ransom from up here" as follows:

The picture on the cover of the album is a preacher leading a congregation off a cliff. The message in much of the album is about self-proclaimed religious leaders dictating to their followers what the truth is, controlling their followers beliefs to accrue more power and monetary rewards to themselves. The title of the song is Selling the Drama. To me, I have always interpretted "Selling tha Drama" to mean the self-proclaimed religious leaders "selling" the story or "drama" of loving God, fearing the flame, burning the crowd that has a name (those nonbelievers who we label as such, who will go to hell), right and wrong, meek and strong, and so on. Those are the stories that we are told by the leaders. Those stories create fear and seperation which, in turn, accrues more power to the leaders who teach them.

So I think the last line "to Christ: a cross/and to me: a chair/I will sit and earn the ransom from up here" is a lyric that comes from a preacher in the first person -- Christ hung on a cross and earned his ransom (spiritual transformation or salvation) through his crucifiction. The preacher sits on a chair at the pulpit and earns his ranson (cash) from the chair. To me, it points to the corruption of the preacher and the contradiction of Chritst's sacrifice of his life out of compassion, verses the preachers lack of sacrifice, sitting in a chair at the pulpit, exploiting Christ on the cross, to "earn" a ransom of cash in Christ's name. To me, the lines hey, now we won't be raped/hey, now we won't be scarred like that" are intended to be a rejection of the drama that the preacher is selling for his own personal gain.
