Bad idea.

I've heard.

But the panhandle (near Wheeling) is supposed to be pretty nice, and that's where one of the places I'm considering going to is. Have you been there?

I did pass through Wheeling once, and it actually looked like a pretty cool town. But it's still hella far away from anywhere with anything actually happening. Especially with you being from NYC, it would seem like hell to you.

Come to California.

That's pretty cool. Well one of my main goals by moving out of the city is to truly "get away from it all," so to speak. I really just want to live as far away from city life as possible for four years. I think it would be a good experience for me. I want to be somewhat close to a city, so I can still be able to travel there once in a while, and Pittsburgh is really close to Wheeling (less than an hour away), so that would be pretty cool. But mainly I like the idea of getting away from city life.

And no, I am not coming to California for college. I was considering applying to University of Redlands last year, but I've decided that California and I would not be a great match, lol. East Coast or Colorado, I say.

Well, you know yourself better than I do (obviously), but from my experience, I think this is a bad idea. It might seem like it would be an interesting experience, but actually, it'll be more boring/frustrating than anything else. I mean, there's always the chance of it working out well and you learning a lot about yourself from the experience...but I wouldn't recommend it. Getting away from it all makes sense, but shit man, you don't have to to fucking WV to do that. There are plenty of better areas that fall in that space between rural and suburban that you'd probably be better off in.

That's true. However, I have stayed in rural areas in the past for a decent amount of time (in Colorado a few times and for a month once in very rural Wyoming). I may get sick of a purely rural setting, but if I'm close to a city, then it wouldn't be as bad. You've got a good point though. I probably need a good balance between suburban and rural (which several places I'm applying to have, too). Particularly New Hampshire, Maryland, and Virginia. Anyway, if I don't like a place, there's always the option of transferring, which has become really easy these days, even after the first year.

I'd also like to be close to outdoors opportunities like hiking, backpacking, and skiing, which is another reason why a city wouldn't work well. Usually there isn't a problem finding it near medium-sized towns away from cities, though.
