The River, A Positive Board for Those Who Love The Song Options

I will not respond to any negative responses about this song. I am looking to discuss it with people who like it!

For some reason The River has been bashed repeatedly on this board. I wanted to make a forum for those that love the song to talk about it without worrying what everyone else thinks. I have had a chance to obsorb SFBM for a while now and there are three songs that stand out to me. Mystery, Love Shines, and The River.

I think that The River is a great song. In fact, it may be my favorite on the album. Despite what others think, I enjoy the melody, I think the hook is catch, and I think it is a fun song to listen too.

I wanted to hear what other lovers of this song think.

Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.

10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes,
in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51,
contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy
when a flaming stealth banana split the sky
like one would hope but never really expect
to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime
and stopping right at my Birkenstocks,
and me yelping "Holy fucking shit!".

Then the X-Files being,
looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan
with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of
vanilla Chig Champa,
did a slow-mo Matrix descent
outta the butt end of the banana vessel
and hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw,
and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip,
and all I could think was:
"I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice
that I pissed my fuckin' pants".


So light in his way,
like an apparition
he had me crying out,
"Fuck me!
It's gotta be
the Deadhead Chemistry.
The blotter got right on top of me.
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"

And after calming me down
with some orange slices
and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One,
the One who will deliver the message.
A message of hope for those who choose to hear it
and a warning for those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.

Then he looked right through me
with somniferous almond eyes.
Don't even know what that means.
Must remember to write it down.
This is so real.
Like the time Dave floated away.

All sorta terrifying.

Well, I can understand that you're not prepared to hear a happy lovesong like The River when you feel as awful as you do.
But believe me: you'll be fine someday.
But you've got a long way to go.
You have to find out (like everybody does) what you want to do with your life, what you believe in, who you can trust and who you can't trust who your friends are and who are not your friends.

It's like "The distance", isn't it?

And I hope for you that someday you find out who you are and that you can be satisfied with yourself and that you will feel as happy as Ed and that you will find someone who eases your pain.

Are you for real?

Even though your post was not directed at me, I have to say that I am happier than I have ever been in my entire life. I know who I am, I've become who I wanted to be, I know who my friends are and I know what I believe in. Guess what? The River is still a shit song. For you to imply that a person that doesn't like the song is somehow unenlightened or doesn't know who they are is the single most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Other than The River of course.
