Thanks dude. As I've stated before, you, too, have some good taste my friend. Matter of fact, you made me buy the Devin Townsend Band's recent album, and I enjoyed it, so good on you. Do you have any more must-buy recommendations?

(I also picked up Anathema's A Fine Day To Exit, Anathema being a band which you, along with other people, recommended to me. I really love that album, the first few songs are truly stellar. I'm gonna try to buy some more of their albums for Christmas.)

Yeah Anathema have done some great stuff, you should download their new song from their website... it's kinda poppy, but very beautiful... got quite a radiohead vibe.

I know I've said it before, but you should definitely try some Opeth. Especially Damnation (if you haven't already). It's definitely not something that you'll love at first listen, but IMO its an amazing album. Very subtle, and if you like PT, SW is completely plastered over the album. I mean, he plays mellotron, piano, does backing vocals, produced, mixed, mastered, and even contributed lyrics to one of the songs. Great album.

Do you like/know King's X? You might like them, check out Gretchen goes to Nebraska. They're described as 'groove rock', but I wouldn't be surprised if Steven Wilson had been influenced by them, some parts of Deadwing and In Absentia are very reminiscent of that album. Big harmonies, and they use the telephone voice effect in a similar way to SW does. (I think it came out in '89, so quite a while before Porcupine Tree did the whole heavier rock/metal thing)

Have you tried any Pain of Salvation? They're one of my favourite bands.. absolutely amazing writing. Try Be, or Remedy Lane. Again, they're definitely not albums you'll appreciate at first listen, but give them a go.

Apart from those albums in your top 10, what are some of your other favourite artists?

Yeah, Anathema is awesome-- I only have their album A Fine Day to Exit, and a handful of their other songs. I hear they were doom metal when they started off for a while...do you have any album of theirs to recommend from this time period? I will def check out the song on their website when I get the chance. I know I'll be picking up A Natural Distaster for a Christmas present for me, because it seems to be rated highest wherever I look.

Funny you mention Damnation like that, because I own the album and absolutely love it. It is very subtle, as you say, and the songwriting is great. Really good album. I know basically every other Opeth album is death metal, which sounds pretty interesting...what should I go for next? I wish I had seen Opeth when they came around last Winter.

I've heard a lot about King's X and Pain of Salvation, and I'll do my best to get my hands on some of their stuff. There's just so much music out there that it's hard to keep up sometimes without being out hundreds or even thousands of dollars. I'm relying on CD's being Christmas presents so that I won't be burning a hole in my wallet.

So, other music I like. Well, I recently compiled a top 50 artists list that I posted on my myspace. Mainly I like classic rock, grunge, prog, and alternative rock, with some metal bands too. Here's the list:

1 Pink Floyd
2 Porcupine Tree
3 Radiohead
4 Jimi Hendrix
5 Cream
6 Live
7 Alice in Chains
8 Love
9 No-Man
10 Neil Young
11 R.E.M.
12 Collective Soul
13 Blackfield
14 Led Zeppelin
15 Stone Temple Pilots
16 Talking Heads
17 The Who
18 Soundgarden
19 Incredible Expanding Mindfuck
20 Joe Walsh
21 Peter Gabriel
22 Ben Harper
23 Bass Communion
24 King Crimson
25 Kraftwerk
26 Dredg
27 Procol Harum
28 Gary Numan
29 The Cars
30 Outlaws
31 Speak No Evil
32 Tortoise
33 Candlebox
34 Pearl Jam
35 Sponge
36 Temple of the Dog
37 Lynyrd Skynyrd
38 Steve Miller Band
39 Cheap Trick
40 Free
41 Tom Petty
42 Lacuna Coil
43 UB40
44 Bush
45 Oceansize
46 Anathema
47 Riverside
48 Opeth
49 Kino
50 Travis

The list goes on and on after that, but at least right now, those are my favorites.

Dude, I think you would really like Dust to Dust. They are a now defunct metal band, but their debut album, which is self-titled, is fucking awesome. It really has a prog-rock feel to it, with keyboard layerings that just sound really cool. I'm not sure you would like it, but I think it's definitely worth checking out. Don't go for anything off their second album, Sick, though, because it's vastly different.

Thanks man. If you had a more extensive concert history, I might be able to tell you if you did, too.
