Don't start me talking about dogs - I could waffle on forever. I'm sat here at the moment dog-sitting 6 shar-pei and a German Shepherd as well as my own two.

I've had several different breeds and a lot of experience caring for and training dogs. But there's only one breed for me and that's shar-pei - the wrinkly dogs. Most breeds are far easier to train, but I like a challenge and I love an independent spirit. You can't force a shar-pei to do anything, but when they do co-operate they are exceptionally good at anything they put their mind to.

And then there's the beastie - he's a Tibetan Mastiff. I waited 20 years to get one and he's rather like owning a lion/bear/JCB combo. If you want a dog that can clear a 6 foot fence from a standing start, can dig holes in concrete, can't be let off the lead because their notion of being with you is being in the same country, who's bark is so loud is bounces your brain off the inside of your skull at close range, who likes to dismantle stuff like picket fences or just snapping the tops off (my friend is going to kill me hwen she gets home!), who removes labels from your clothing while you're wearing them, isn't fussy where they shove their tongue - i.e. your eyeball or tonsils and who's idea of being obedient is considering your request and getting back to you on it, this is the breed for you! I love the infuriating bloody thing dearly and he does have his good points.
