My name is John Weaver. Along with my wife Nancy, we are the Weavers. Nancy and I strongly dispute the depiction of York, PA, in the song “Shit Towne.”

First of all, we never lived up the street from the Kowalczyks. The Kowalczyks lived about four blocks away. Why Ed and his friends chose to include us in their inaccurate depiction of York is beyond me.

The “crackheads” he speaks of were likely Dan and Linda, two Operation Desert Storm veterans who came back with severe PTSD when their entire platoon was ambushed and blown up. They returned to the US shattered versions of themselves, and self-medicated with all sorts of narcotics before eventually getting better and becoming productive members of society. To call these war heroes “crackheads” is deeply disturbing on multiple fronts.

Now, if there is one thing that is accurate about the song, it’s that the tall grass indeed made it hard to see beyond the Kowalczyk's property. But whose fault is that? Ed had a mower in the garage. He could have used it. Instead, he cleared it out to play music with his high school buddies.

Also, there is nothing criminal about hardline symmetry of people and pets. In fact, symmetry has been a staple of architectural design and urban planning since long before Ed was born.

I also dispute that Ed and his friends did not bother anyone. They played their instruments at all odd hours of the night, with total disregard for their neighbors, many of whom were honest, hard-working, middle class folk, and in the case of Dan and Linda, war heroes.

He is also entirely wrong about the mailman. The mailman did not visit each of us in turn. He had a convoluted, zig-zagging route that took DAYS to deliver even the simplest of letters. If there was anything Ed could have had real gripes with, it was the impractical way in which the mail was delivered. But, Ed didn’t notice that. Probably because he never mowed his lawn.

At no point did Ed or his friends “gotta live in Shit Towne.” It’s a free country, and they could have picked up and moved at any time. Eventually they did.

Would you trust the opinion of a man who prays to “do me wrong but don’t hold me back”? What in the heck is that supposed to mean?

And last but not least, there’s no “E” at the end of the word “Town”. Ed and his friends clearly suffered from a lack of education, and I urge you to take that into consideration when you determine if their depiction of York is accurate. In my 40 years of living here, I can assure you it is not.

Us Weavers are rarely on the computer, so, if you want to reach us, please write us a letter. Fair warning though, we still have the same mailman, so it might be awhile before we receive it.
