In 1991, the four members of Live released their debut album,Mental Jewelry (Radioactive Records).From the first single released form the LP,"Operation Spirit",it was obvious that these four young men had been gifted with enormous talent,and something to say. Fans noticed,and with the release of their sophomore album,Throwing Copper (Radioactive Records) in 1994,the band exploded on to the charts,resulting in the album being certified as 8X Platinum in the U.S.,reaching No.1 here in the States, as well as in Australia and other countries.
The original line up of the band have released seven albums to date.When lead singer/songwriter Ed Kowalcyzk left the group in 2009,the singer-less band held auditions, and decided on vocalist Chris Shinn to join their ranks.Together, they recorded The Turn ,the band's eighth full-length record.While the material on The Turn is strong,Kowalczyk's absence can be felt.It mattered not how strong the album may have been,or how well Shinn performed on vocals,the band was not the same,and fans knew that. Sales for The Turn were disappointing.
Fast forward to 2018....when Kowalczyk and Live guitarist Chad Taylor met to promote singer Zoe LaBelle at a radio station,this meeting lit the flame needed to bring the band back together.Fans rejoiced,as all four original members eventually entered the studio,with the result being the first original music by the band since their last album together,Songs From Black Mountain in 2006.
The new EP,titled Local 717 contains five new songs form the band. Heavier in style than past releases,Local 717 shows the growth the band has experienced,both personally and musically. The album opens with the first single ,"Love Lounge".With it's catchy chorus and driving rhythm,the song grabs the listener and takes them for a melodic,hard rocking ride.Of the five tracks offered here.one of the best is "Waterfall", with it's sassy vocal and harmony-laden delivery,it shines bright.
Overall,the four piece alternative rock band have delivered an EP that brings the band into the present.After almost 30 years of bringing us deep,melodic and poignant songs,Live have much more to say,and they say it with great style on Local 717.
