Chris Shinn is a total class act. I have had several opportunities to speak with him at length and he was truly a gracious, humble, kind and warm human being toward me. And he is a fan of Live and also a fan of Live's fans, while being a member of the actual band. His first appearance on stage on March 12, 2012, as he emerged from the cloud of smoke to Damn At Otter Creek gave me goosebumps. I had never heard that song as an opener and the entire band absolutely relentlessly CRUSHED it. I never thought I would see CCP perform Live music again at that point and that whole show was overwhelmingly satisfying. I will never forget the opener and the performance of T.B.D. At that show. And the Pillars of Davidson at the Throwing Copper show in Atlantic City was epic. One fo the best Live performances I have ever seen. I have said many times before that I thank Kevin Martin and Chris Shinn for bringing CCP out of the malaise and emotional dead zone that followed the infamous "hiatus" and rekindled their creative spark. They showed them life after the hiatus and not only bridged the gap between 2009 and this reunion, but actually fueled a resergance of high energy rock n' roll that laid dormant and untapped for many years. They helped CCP go from Songs From Black Mountain to creating The Gracious Few and the rock sound of The Turn, and put out performances like we saw from The Gracious Few and Live over the last 5 or 6 years years. Of course I'm not taking anything away from CCP in all of that. But I think the record should not take anything away from Chris either. Fair is fair. It took a big man to step in front of the microphone left by Ed and a big man to post this gracious epilogue to his time in Live, without controversy or coarseness. And ALL Live fans should thank Chris, because IF we start to see Live return to their rock roots and alternative sounding music, it will be because of Chris Shinn, not despite him. They were not headed in that direction when they were together recording SFBM. And Live continued without Ed and sounded like hard rock. And now Ed is back in the band and they are all fired up and ready to rock. When Live released "The Turn" Chad described it as something he learned from the movie business - as the turning point of the story structure where there is rising action and the climax. It is appropriate that Chris Shinn and The Turn were "the turn" for Live. I don't know if they knew how poignant that was in the larger view fo the history of this band. I hope Chris reads this.
