QUOTE
Ed Kowalczyk Performing Throwing Copper – Live at Club Soda – October 3rd, 2015 – Montreal, QC

Album tours are all the rage. Some bands do it for nostalgia, some bands do it to try and resurrect their careers. When I first heard that Ed Kowalczyk was going to perform Throwing Copper, I struggled to understand why. It’s a tour to celebrate an album he made with a band he left behind. Okay, to be completely honest, I thought that after the initial excitement I would love to hear this iconic album live.

Throwing Copper was a gem of beauty and spirituality when angst and detachment were all the rage in the rock world. Interesting trivia: it is the only album to peak at No.1 on the US Billboard charts for the first time more than a year after its release.

From the beginning of opening song “The Damn at Otter Creek,” it was clear that Kowalczyk still had the chops, theEdK-2 charisma, and the presence to do the album justice. He then proceeded to send the crowd into a frenzy with “Selling the Drama,” “I Alone,” and “Iris.” There wasn’t a single silent person in the sold-out Club Soda crowd. You certainly couldn’t tell that the majority of the crowd were closer to age 40 than 20. The opening bars of “Lightning Crashes” sent a chill through the crowd. Until he started wailing the chorus, you could barely hear Kowalczyk over the crowd. He told the crowd how the record company thought he was nuts when he wanted that song to be a single; they told him there was no way radio stations were going to pick up a five-and-a-half-minute song that takes over a minute to get to the chorus. Oops. “Top” and “All Over You” closed out the first half of the fourteen-track set with the crowd chanting for more.

There lies one of the rubs of the album format. Albums tend to be front loaded while live performances are usually back loaded. Thirty minutes in and they’d already blown through all the album’s bigger tracks. Let me officially give bands permission to play the songs out of order. Hell, you can usually just play the album backwards to better results. Unless you enjoy spending the end of the set playing the tracks they usually skipped to an audience already soaked in your load, then, by all means, proceed.

Almost in recognition of this fact, Kowalczyk offered the crowd a very healthy seven-song second set. It contained two of his solo tracks, and then just filled in Live’s greatest hits. During closing song “Dolphin’s Cry,” Kowalczyk wandered amongst the crowd, absorbing their energy. It was a great moment of vulnerability by an artist who wears a lot of emotion on his sleeve. A great way to close a fantastic night of music.
