3/24/15 Ed Kowalczyk at Soiled Dove Underground

If you have Live’s Throwing Copper CD, and you might because it sold over 8 million copies, you know Ed Kowalczyk’s set list for the evening at Soiled Dove Underground in Denver on Tuesday. Celebrating 20 years of Live’s second release, Throwing Copper, Ed Kowalczyk played all the songs in order, including the hidden track, Horse. Supported by Zak Loy, some back beats, and a video screen, Kowalczyk put on an amazing show. If you expected an opening band and showed up a little late, you missed part of the show, as Ed Kowalczyk was the only act.

The biggest crowd reactions came from I Alone, Lightning Crashes, and All Over You. Kowalczyk took a trip through the sold-out crowd and got up close and personal with his adoring fans. Kowalczyk shared stories and seemed to get lost in his own songs, as did the audience. It was guitar central on the stage; electric Rock’n'Roll relics Fifty-two model (rocknrollrelics.net), acoustic for Zak and Ed (godinguitars.com), Resonator/dobro slide guitar (beardguitars.com), Lap-steel guitar (vintage 1960s guyatone), Mandolin ( fender.com).

After completion of Throwing Copper, Kowalczyk encored with All That I Wanted and Seven off of one of his solo releases, The Flood and the Mercy, a U2 cover of With Or Without You, a heartfelt message about World Vision, and a couple of older songs by Live, Turn My Head and Lakini’s Juice. Kowalczyk finished the show with Heaven and Overcome. Amazing show. On a Tuesday. To a sold-out venue.
