Ed Kowalczyk will perform Dec. 12 at the Chameleon Club, 223 N. Water St., Lancaster.

The former Live frontman will play the band's multiplatinum album "Throwing Copper" in its entirety to celebrate the CD's 20th anniversary. The album features songs, including "I Alone" and "Lightning Crashes."

According to a news release, Kowalczyk just wrapped sold-out anniversary tours in Australia and Europe.

Tickets to the Lancaster show go on sale 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26. They cost $30 in advance and $32 the day of the show. For details and tickets, visit the Chameleon Club box office, call 1-800-745-3000 or visit TicketFly.com.

I listened to tracks from both shows and here's what I learned:

1. Ed's backing band is much weaker than I thought. Compared to CCP they just don't play with the same synchronization or amplification. It's almost like their guitars are out of tune when compared to the experts.

2. I really love Ed's voice. I don't care that it's not what it was in 1994, I still think Ed has the best signing voice I've ever heard, which is what drew me to Live in the first place. Ed could sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I'd still listen to it 20 times. While I love the angst Chris brings to Live, it will never be Ed's voice.

So who wins?

I think Chad Taylor said it the best when, given the circumstances, we as fans really have the best of both worlds. When I listen to Ed and his band I hear Ed's voice and use my imagination to fill in the rest. When I hear CCCP I hear the music and use my imagination to fill in the rest. Both are great acts, and I'm glad we get these songs coming through our cities twice as much as we otherwise would have.

I don't wait for the day Live 1.0 reunites. If it happens, then swell. But right now that's not the case, so I'm happy to see both acts. I really like The Turn. I also really like TFATM, albeit for entirely different reasons. They're different acts, and I love them both.

Nothing about Ed's career and CCCP's career at this point are in competition. They're both happy doing their own thing. I really think we all should be too. And if you really feel Ed is shit without CCP, or CCCP isn't Live, then keep it to yourself. Some of us just want to hear the music.
