There was basically no promotion behind the LIVE show and in just a few short weeks it stil was just short of a sell out. The Chameleon did not even have posters up for this show, yet Ed's face has been plastered all over the walls for months. Guarantee that LIVE would have sold it out if the fix had been on sale months ago and it was promoted better. I live in Lancaster and I literally know no one who is going to see Ed next week.

QUOTE
Ed Kowalczyk is coming home to sold-out show at the Chameleon

SCOTT KREIDER LNP CORRESPONDENT

There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.

For Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk, Lancaster County is home. And it doesn’t take a pair of ruby slippers to transport him back to the place where, as he says, “everything all started for me.”

“I remember our first show at the Chameleon. I had just moved out of my mom’s place and into Lancaster, and we had about 300 people come out to see us open for The Pixies. That was when I realized how important the Lancaster County scene to us was.”

The York County native had linked up with fellow band members Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer and Chad Gracey in middle school.

Influenced by bands like U2 as well as local bands, Live found its niche playing acoustically driven, emotional ballads that appealed to a wide audience. The band soon became immersed in the rapidly growing central Pennsylvania music scene.

“Lancaster and the outer areas have always been a place full of progressive thinkers and artists, so it doesn’t surprise me that it’s produced so many successful acts,” the singer-songwriter says. “To actually live and breathe music with all these other people was such a unique experience.”

The quartet found success in their sophomore album, “Throwing Copper.” With hits like “Lightning Crashes” and “Selling the Drama,” Live became one of the most successful hard rock bands to come out of this area.

A slew of albums and singles took them into the new millennium before Kowalczyk left the band in 2009.

With a lengthy legal battle with his former bandmates behind him, Kowalczyk will return to the Chameleon Club this week in support of his latest solo effort, “The Flood and The Mercy.” The concert is sold out.

Best yet to come

“I think the thing that keeps me going is knowing that I haven’t written my best material yet,” Kowalczyk explains. “I’ve had that worldwide connection and interest, so now it’s about writing my best material and trying to gain that personal connection with every fan that I can.”

Not only is the desire to better his previous works still there, but his earlier songs have become his children, maturing over time and presenting the chance for reflection.

“A lot of these songs have taken on different meanings over the years,” he explains. “A song like “Lightning Crashes” has really aged well over time. It parallels so well with the birth of my four children.”

On “The Flood and the Mercy,” Kowalczyk sticks with what he knows, songs filled with emotional lyrics and catchy hooks that draw in listeners. The tracks sound similar to his previous albums.

Why stray from home?

This is the question Kowalczyk will be asking himself as he mounts the Chameleon Club stage Friday night. Because there’s no place like home.
