All Access Pass
Chad Taylor Of Live On Adding New Singer Chris Shinn, “The Work Environment That We Have Is So Healthy Now.”
November 11, 2014 5:35 PM

On the latest All Access Pass with Billy Kidd, Billy talked to Chad Taylor and Chris Shinn, Guitarist and Lead Singer of Live. In the interview they talk about the band’s new album, and adding Chris Shinn to replace former singer Ed Kowalczk. Listen to the complete interview in the audio below.

In the interview Chad talked about the bands newest album saying, “It’s called ‘The Turn’. Eleven brand new songs from Live, and it’s our first record in 8 years.”

Chad followed that up by talking about the other members of the band. “Patrick Dahlheimer and Chad Gracey are the epicenter of Live. They’re the foundation that Chris and I get to sand on. Guitar Players and Singers have a tendency to suck up the glory in rock bands. The Truth is… both Patrick and Chad they actually are the real magic,” Chad said.

Then Chris touched on what it was like joining the already established band. “It’ wasn’t like I won a contest… I’ve known the guys for a longtime and it was a very slow process,” Chris said. “We grew into it together,” He continued.

“It was all about his talent, and then most importantly the work environment that we have is so healthy now. There is a lot of laughter and a lot of joy,” Chad Added.

Chad continued, “Chris came at it with such a perfect perspective to be able to really get the course and now that we’re on that course it’s very easy to maintain.”

” We’ve been very precious and careful with this music and I think it shows,” Chris finished.

Listen to the complete interview in the audio above.

Please explain why you think so. The DJ used language which sounded a little challenging, then he apologized after Chris answered with conviction. And you cannot dispute that LIVE was a collaboration of a group, not the names. It was a brotherhood and a band dynamic. It was wonderful with Ed up to a point, and it's back in the wonderful state if you cared about the first 4 records.

You just have it out for them, that much is true. Move on.

The Turn is no where near the first four records in quality IMHO, and chart position(fact). Hell, in my opinion, The Turn is well below quality of Live's last three records, and chart position(also fact).

You avoided another question. But as to quality of the music, to the ear of the listener, The Turn is so far in line with the first four records musically due to the real power of LIVE....the bass and drums. Without that you get V, BOP and SFBM.

This is unchallengeable. Chart position today doesn't mean success. The music business sales is dead, even with the current outlier of Taylor Swift. Digital sales way down, selling platinum is all but a small blip everywhere. TS is the first this year. THe comparison of the chart position on last 3 records is attributed to this music sales stuff. Spotify and You Tube have killed sales for artists.
And some marginal LIVE fans heard SFBM and were never heard from again. The Turn has to start small. It's and Indy record and has to build the 'brand', as you prefer to reference, back up to get some people to notice it.

It's a superior piece of music.

Now why is Chris full of himself? Care to give us you factual view?

I believe that Live over did it with The Turn when it came to bass, drums, and guitar solos. It is nice when you jam out occasionally on a record, but The Turn has a jam session on basically every song. It became very repetitive for me, very fast.

CCP need a strong lead singer like Ed or even Kevin Martin to reign them in a bit.

I don't understand where you are hearing these lengthy guitar solos and jam sessions. I'm beginning to think that you didn't actually listen to The Turn. It's a very straight forward rock album. It has a single song over 5 minutes, and the rest are 3-4 minutes. In fact, I find that the album is far too straightforward and relies too heavily on choruses. Their first four albums had more songs with longer "jam sessions" and instrumental parts. You are just inventing complaints now.

I listened to the album. Virtually every song has an extended music session. Hell, all five videos that they released came with a slow motion Chad Taylor guitar solo part. That is fine once or twice an album, but not repeatedly. At least for me.

That's called a bridge, and is an essential part of any song to break the repetition from verses and choruses. That said, The Turn is no more jammy or instrumental than any of Live's first 4 albums. Even V had longer jam sessions for some songs.

It's fine if you want verse/chorus/verse/chorus (end of song) - Thats what Ed started heavily with on BOP and on every song on SFBM and his current solo stuff. But to claim that you are a Live fan, and like all their older material (which contains more "jam sessions" than The Turn) is getting old.
