Chad explains the reasons behind using PledgeMusic to gather funds in a Facebook post. According to Chad these high cost items are used to fund the promotion of the album. The band themselves don't take a cut.

>>>< Why Pledge Music? In the modern era of music, the vast majority of promotional dollars come from alternative funding sources like advertisers, sponsors, crowd funding and campaigns like Pledge. Record companies simply don't have the capital to support their artists.

Thankfully, by using a resource like Pledge Music fans are given direct access to a number of intimate experiences drawing the fan and the artist closer. We've tried to hard to outline a campaign that will help us promote the album but also give our most die hard fans plenty of reasons to support the band. This is done in the spirit of creating a win-win.

The money generated from this campaign will support our ability to promote the new material throughout the globe. This includes offerings like the VIP packages. These dollars are critical to our ability to promote LIVE at radio and video channels, and to increase our social media budgets. The band members don't profit from these campaigns other than to increase awareness and visibility of our new album.

Right. And the more they promote, the more they sell, the more they make. Maybe they don't directly keep it but ultimately it's not exactly "for the fans".
