Live are electrifying
As The American Quartet Close Fesivent Lévis by Yves LeClerc

(Quebec City, Canada) August 4, 2014 The new formation of the American band Live offered a powerful set filled with electricity yesterday at the close of Festivent Lévis. The arrival of singer-guitarist Chris Shinn, replacing Ed Kowalczyk, who left the foursome in 2009, seems to have brought more raw power to Live’s sound. From the start, this is what the public was able to see.

The band opened with a new song, a never disclosed track entitled, The Siren’s Call. The room filled with a roaring bass sound, and a particularly heavy guitar riff with a lot of distortion and detuning. A little reminder of the sound made by the original formation from York, Pennsylvania, in the 1990s.

Guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer, drummer Chad Gracey and singer Chris Shinn sporting a mohawk on his head, powered on, after the blistering start with two massive hits: All Over You and Selling the Drama from the album Throwing Copper. The audience was at full attention.

Live seems to have lost some emotion and subtlety with the departure of the charismatic Kowalczyk, but has gained enormously in terms of power. Freaks and Pain Lies on the Riverside followed with the same shock treatment. The melodies are still present, but the electric meter is thoroughly on high and they did not disappoint.

Suddenly, the first guitar lines of Lightning Crashes start to resonate on the site and the crowd shows her pleasure. Chad Taylor slyly and deliberately stretches the intro on his six-string to make the pleasure last. The audience sang the lyrics creating what would be one of the highlights of the evening.

Shinn, who seems to be less shy than Kowalczyk, sings the first words of The Dolphin’s Cry and the intensity rises even further, although parts of Iris and Lakini’s Juice stretched a little too unnecessarily long, when delivered back to back.

With seven selections, Live drew largely from their album Throwing Copper, which was number one in Canada and the United States in 1994.

The show ends and we’re reminded that Live has cut their performance too short with only a 75 minute show. Thankfully, they returned to close with I Alone and White, Discussion and the audience gets what they want.
